MRS. ALICE P. BERLIN
Alice Pearl Berfield was bom in September 20th, 1879, in Homer, Potter County, the second daughter of Washington and Alice (Colcord) Berfield. Her mother died at the time of her birth and she was taken by Mr. and Mrs. Benjamin Berfield and reared by them, cherished as a daughter, in their home in Wharton, and afterwards in Coudersport. She was graduated from the Coudersport high school afterwards taking a course in teachers training in Buffalo.
She was married on January 29, 1902, to Rev. Fulton Berlin of Bolivar, N. Y., going with him to Bolivar, where he was filling a charge in the Methodist Episcopal Church. From there they filled the following charges: Warsaw, Honeoye Falls, Spencerport, Springfield and Lindenburg, until Rev. Berlin s death on February 28, 1920. With her two children, she then returned to Coudersport until the death of her foster parents. She had been living with her daughter Leanore in Painesville, Ohio, at the time of her death, on June 19th. Leanore is assistant in the biology department of Lake Erie College for women, and they shared an apartment together, joining her son Datus in the summer in Connecticut for their vacations.
Mrs. Berlin is survived by
- one own sister, Stella Berfield Downs, of Port Allegany, and
- Mrs. Louise Larrabee of Sound Beach, Connecticut, with whom she was brought up as a sister.
Funeral services were held from the M. E. Church with Rev. A. M. Dietterich officiating and there were many floral offerings which gave mute testimony of the love of her many friends.
- Burial was in Eulalia Cemetery.
