So I want to get this history page fired up again. What I want to do is start with our direct ancestor of a particular line. In this case Josiah Cook/Cooke, 1610- 1673 ,
He arrived sometime prior to 1633 in America.
His descendants come on down to my GG Grandma Polly Cook wife of Aaron Hall.
This attached writing is a fun read. I will work forward one descendant at a time. This guy sounds like a bit of a character. Glad we don't have any characters in this family.
...... Josiah Cooke,
The first evidence of Josiah in Plymouth was in 1633 when he was summoned to appear in court with Edward Doty for causing a breach of the peace in causing a fracas. Doty was a servant to Stephen Hopkins of the Mayflower and was often in trouble with the courts. Both men were ordered to pay six shillings.
In 1638 Josiah owned 40 acres of land granted to him on the north side Fresh Lake. The same year he was a Grand Juror examining the cause of the death of John England.
In 1640 he was a surveyor and Constable in 1641-42 in Plymouth.
In 1645 he moved to Nausett (Eastham), one of the first settlers. He served as Constable there also along with other civil positions. In 1648 he was appointed to sell wine as a "Register Keeper".
He bought land from Pompmo, the Indian Sachem at Eastham near Pleasant Bay for a "few moose-skins, Indian beads, wampam, little knives and the like ". In 1659 Josiah and five others were appointed to survey all the lands granted or laid out to the inhabitants of the township. Although Josiah was not considered a Purchaser or "Old Comer", he was often given special grants from the courts as if he were. Over the years he come into large parcels of land in Eastham, South Orleans, Bridgewater and Weymouth. He had more run ins with the law and was known as material, impulsive and often in fights with neighbors.

I am descended from said Stephen Hopkins off the Mayflower, as well as from the Billingtons. Hopkins was also 'his own man', having almost been executed for mutiny during his earlier trip to Virginia; thank Goodness they needed every able-bodied man ... uh, person.
