Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission, Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. _______________ 20190612HAv- The Kane Republican (Kane, Pennsylvania) 18 Oct 1927, Tue Page 1 The Kane Republican (Kane, Pennsylvania) 18 Oct 1927, Tue Page 1 - article text (OCR) SHOOTING OF AN INTOXICATED MAN IS BEING INVESTIGATED Mysteriously shot by an unknown assailant while he was in an alleged drunken frenzy, early Monday morning, Fred Dufton, of Wrights, five miles south of Port Allegany, lies dead in the Gallup undertaking parlors at Port Allegany and his son, Frederick, Jr., is under arrest as a material witness by order of Coroner H. Clay Heffner, who conducted a preliminary investigation of the shooting last night. The bullet which caused Dufton's death struck him from, a distance of approximately 100 feet, Coroner Heffner believes, and spread so as to cause 13 separate wounds, two of which penetrated the right kidney and the back of the neck, resulting in internal hemorrhages which caused instant death. The weapon used was a 12 gauge shotgun, the property of Dufton, which members of his family, the sole witnesses of the affray, claim was in his hand at the time of the shooting. It is the opinion of Coroner Heffner who has made the only probe of the shooting, due, 'to County Detective Jack Allison being in Buffalo, that Dufton could not possibly have fired the shot which resulted in his death. The coroner will hold an inquest tonight at 7 o'clock In the Gallup un dertaking parlors at Port Allegany to determine the cause of the death. Preliminary reports of the affair which reached the coroner led to the belief that Dufton had committed suicide by firing a shot into his brain. The coroner found however, that what was believed to be a gunshot wound through the brain was merely an abrasiou caused when the dead man struck his head against some object while tearing about In an alleged drunken - fury. Coroner Heffner said last night that he has only the story of Fred Dufton, Jr., his brother, Dearrel, 16, and their mother, Mrs. Dufton in regard to the shooting. . The trio told the coroner that Dufton had spent the early portion of Sunday evening in Liberty where ho had been drinking heavily. On returning home the father immediately picked a quarrel with members of his household, smashing windows and chairs as he threatened to kill the three older members as well as two Infant children who were asleep. Dufton then asked for his shotgun, and fearing that he might carry out his threat of wholesale murder, Mrs. Dufton told the coroner she secured the weapon and two shells, the only ammunition in the house, and hurled them out of a window. Taking her three-year-old infant In her arms, Mrs. Dufton said she ran to the home of a neighbor, Cecil Russell, requesting that he visit the Dufton home and try to quiet her frenzied husband. Russell did as requested, the woman said, and after talk ing to Dufton believed that he ha brought his into a more amiable frame of mind so returned to his own home. Katherine Rena Henderson was born March 15, 1886, at Port Allegany, a daughter of William R. and Lettie Weidick(sic) Henderson. She married Fred J. Dufton, who died October, 1927. Her father's family, the Hendersons, came from Cassville, Pa, where for generations they were active in the life of the community. An aunt, Mrs. W.F. Green, still resides in Cassville. Survivors include four daughter: - Mrs. Andy Nelson, of Rixford; - Margaret, - Florence, and - Imogene at home; three sons: - Fred, - Darrel, and - Joseph. There are also three grandchildren and - one half-sister, Mrs. George Prentice of Friendship. - Glenn Henderson, her only brother, who served with distinction during the late World War, died in service only a month before the signing of the Armistice. Funeral services were held on Tuesday, December 24, at the Wrights church, with the Rev. A.S. Wright officiating. - Interment was made in Fairview cemetery.
