Hi John. In case you get this someday I wanted to send a quick note after finding your post about Coudersport, and the picture of the Zippo. Gosh thanks for that. :)
Harry Brock was my great-grandfather. He and his wife Hattie came to Coudersport in 1891 from Ukraine. His younger son (of "sons") - my grandfather Walter Brock - took over scrap ("junk" in the old census forms) business after coming home serving as a Army supply officer in the European Theatre of WWII. Soon after getting back to Coudersport from the Battle of the Bulge, he moved "Brock Steel Company" and his young family to Cumberland, Maryland, where I was lucky to know him many years before his death.
Walter's only son, Larry Brock, took over Brock Steel in Cumberland and sadly had to close the business years ago. HOWEVER Larry Brock would sure love to talk to you about that Zippo. He is alive and well (born in Coudersport in 1945, like 9 months exactly from Walter's return from war. :)
All the best to you

TODAY
Hi, John! Thank you so much for your note.
I get excited when I see my ancestral names, especially in the Potter County, PA area.
Unfortunately, your Brocks are not among them. Isaac & Amy ELLSWORTH BROCK were my 4th grgrandparents, their daughter Amy Elmina marrying Henry DINGMAN in 1850, becoming my 3rd grgrandparents. When I researched your Brocks, I had to rule out joint ancestry when I found that they emigrated from Ukraine (now the site of such unspeakable horror and tragedy, and maybe hope).
Thank you, too, for the expanded information on your family.
Regarding the Zippo lighter, I got the photo from a very active Potter County genealogy group on FB. The photo info often gets lost in ancestry and it is, in any event, truncated. Here is the entire thread for that photo; I think you might find this interesting:

Tell us about it this should be good history a Lot of people don't know about.

I think this business was located next to the Calvary Church. The building is now associated with that church.

We bought our house on N. Main St. from Norman and Jessie Brock. He was a member of this Brock family. His wife Jessie was a niece of the Jones family. The house was the home of the Jones and was built shortly after the Civil War by one of the Jones brothers returned home to Coudersport after the War. He was a businessman. Later Jones brothers became a lawyer and a doctor. Joan Rhody

Norm and Jess were our 'back door ' neighbors in the 40's -50's. really nice couple. did not know history of the home. thanks for the info.
Dale Ulkins
It was indeed next to the Calvary Church, by the Chestnut Street Bridge right down the street from where we lived.
Jim Yardlay
Would that have been in the 50's
Dale Ulkins
Yes indeed.

The Brock scrap yard was located in south Coudersport near the round house, using the railroad to transport scrap. As kids we called it the junk yard and used it as a mischievous playground.
Dale Ulkins
Correct, but the office..... and some of the junk was where I described it. We always went there looking for some part to adapt to some junk we were inventing or repairing. I don't want to confuse the gentleman who was inquiring about it.
Paul Lynn Gardner
Who was the lady at the office, who would weigh our junk bicycle parts, etc. and give us a handful of change?
Dale Ulkins
Gosh, I had forgotten completely about how we'd do that..... probably for money to fund our sugar addiction. I tried to sell brother Doug Ulkins there once but the lady wouldn't deal. But it's just as well. He developed a great personality later in life.
Scott Robbins
Could the lady in the office be Mrs Kolat?
Dale Ulkins
I sure don't remember.

Jim, my grandmother's maiden name was Yardlay. Not many people that I am aware of spell the last name that way.....

Terri Kay Gibson
So you are Uncle Jack's son?
Jim Yardlay
I remember aunt Izzy and Uncle Bob very well. Caught some nice trout in their pond.
Terri Kay Gibson
Wow. So we would be cousins.
Jim Yardlay
Yes I am.
Terri Kay Gibson
Hoot was my dad
Jim Yardlay
I didn't really know Hoot, he was older, I am closer in age to Rubin.
Nancy Gibson
Family reunion, this is as close as we will get to it. I am the oldest of the cousins and it has been a long, long time since I have seen you all except for Janet.
