My grandmother was one month old when she was adopted.
Her approximate date of birth would have been October 11, 1905.
She was indeed Anglosaxon. Appearance wise, she had a fair complexion, with light hair and blue eyes. (I have photos I can send you if this will help.)
From the DNA testing, the haplogroup indicates Ukraine area of descent.
I will copy my sister on our correspondence as she is also very interested.

Ahh, yes!
She was my closest mtDNA match, so yes, VERY close.
Adopted in 1905, how old was she?
Can you estimate her birthdate?
This is getting fascinating, I'm hooked. I need to understand the science better. How are you on this, I mean, the significance of the alleles, the T, HVR1, etc?
I think it would help if I got some input from older family members, to narrow this down.
Any hints as to ethnicity? I assume she appears straight Anglosaxon.
Anything might help.

I'm very sorry that I forgot to mention my maiden name.
Her DNA was submitted under Mary Louise DiPiero.
I hope we can find some link.

Janice,
Do you mind if I ask your maiden name?
How were we matched? What name should I look for in searching for your mother's data as it relates to mine?
I have transferred most of my data from the DNA website into spreadsheets, so we need to find the data match.
We could trade data sets, if you're willing. It would be very interesting to see where we overlap.
What is your mother's married name?
I find no Starks in the name matches, so I guess I'm asking, under what name did she submit her sample for DNA testing?
I'm keen on resolving this, and together we should be able to do it.
Sincerely,
john

Dear John,
Thank you so very much for the response and the details regarding your family search.
As I mentioned, my maternal grandmother was a foundling in New York's Harlem area.
She was found in the vestibule of a Boarding Home on November 11, 1905 by a Mr. Peter Hulsa (one of the renters). I believe this area of New York was quite nice at this time.
She was taken to Bellevue Hospital and named Adelaide Martin. She was placed in several foster homes until being adopted by Mr. and Mrs. Reece of Mount Carmel Pennsylvania.
She grew up and married Joseph Stark, so my mother's maiden (sic, married) name is Stark.
(My married name is Kelley.) We have been trying for many years to locate someone in my grandmother's blood line, but have been unsuccessful.
I don't have genealogy software, but perhaps I should look into this.
Many thanks for your assistance.
Sincerely,
Janice Kelley

Dear Janice,
Absolutely! I mean, if I can.
I have over 20,000 people in my file and I have been focusing for the past few years on improving accuracy, documenting sources, etc.
I will certainly help if I can, because any info you share with me also improves my knowledge base.
My uncle was adopted by my grandparents when my aunt, their first child, became pregnant, in the mid-40's.
She left, got pregnant again, put this one up for adoption (it's a long story) and this half-sibling of my uncle/cousin finally made the connection when a professional genealogist he'd hired found the family about 5 years ago through my website, since I had the basic details in my tree.
It was such a happy discovery for all of us!
Sorry for the tangent, but this stuff really can have beneficial results.
Please share your maiden name and if you can give any other names and dates, I will look for matches.
Do you have genealogy software, like FTM (Family Tree Maker)? I can share GEDCOM files, if you do, or just send a printout (ecopy) of a genealogy report, which would give the relationships, etc.
I am excited to help, and to learn more about our connection.
It is exactly with such contacts in mind that I did the mitochondrial testing!
Sincerely,
John wetzel

Dear Dr. Wetzel,
I received word from Family Tree DNA that there is a match between my mother and yourself.
We are actually attempting to find information regarding my mother's mother who was adopted in NYC in 1905.
We have no record of her biological family as she was a foundling.
Obviously, my grandmother has passed away but we continue the search for a link to her heritage.
Please let me know if you can shed any light on our situation.
Many thanks,
Sincerely,

Thank you, Janice.
No further information yet. I'm going back through my tree at that generation and filling in details, hoping that something might jump out.
I'm also completing more of your family. It would really help to have your father and grandfather names and info, etc.
Apparently there are not many trees published with your family, yet.
I'm about to leave NYC, haven't had time to go the any of the bureaus, etc. but it sounds like you've picked that over pretty thoroughly.
I'll make some family calls over the weekend, just didn't have a chance this week.

Hi John,
I hope you had an enjoyable and productive trip to New York.
I want to send you the following distinguishing information regarding my grandmother:
She had blue eyes and light hair.
My father always said she looked English.
She had a pronounced colic in the back of her head.
She died of bladder cancer at age 80.
She had high blood pressure.
If I think of any others I will surely let you know.
Were you able to find out any additional information?

Hi John,
Thanks so much for all the valuable information. I'm impressed at how thorough your research is.
It is so interesting, to say the least.
The Reece Family (Rizzi) were the adopted parents of my grandmother.
I'm wondering why the hospital gave her the name "Adelaide Martin". They have records at the Catholic Home Bureau in New York City (where she was sent following the hospital). However, they will not release the records. My grandmother and mother had tried for many years. They tell us the records are "sealed". They did mention that there is not a lot of information in her record, but I still try a way to find access them. I'm curious about the census information listing Adelle as adopted in 1910.
Is it possible the records misspelled her name and recorded the wrong year?
I will forward some of the information to my cousin, Rick Reece.
So many thanks once again.

I am very impressed by the amount of research you have done. I hope, somewhere along the line, our paths will cross. I am forwarding some old photographs of my grandmother. Her many names include Adelaide Martin, Aileen Reece, Eileen Reece and Eileen Stark. She eventually married Joseph Stark of Shamokin, PA. (German heritage). I am preparing some other family photographs to send to you. Perhaps you will find your great grandmother had visited New York at some point. Have you established any link with your other DNA matches? Sincerely, Janice Kelley
