Alonzo W Middleton -------- The Beacon is pleased to publish from the pen of her much loved son, Rev. J. A. Ellis, the following account of this life and death: Helen M. Clark was born at New London, Connecticut, August 6, 1826. died at Fort Collins, Colorado, Oct. 31st, 1909. Moved from Connecticut to Yates county, New York in her childhood, later to Potter county, Pennsylvania, where on May 24th, 1846, she was united in marriage to Ethel C. Ellis. In the fall of 1860 they moved to northwestern Iowa locating at Estherville. In 1861 her companion enlisted in Company I, 7th Iowa cavalry volunteers, after which the family moved to Spirit Lake, where she cared for her family of four children midst those strenuous pioneer days while her husband for three years was in the army on the frontier. April 18th 1890, her husband died in the christian faith, since which time she has lived most of the time by her self with her children near she. She has always been one of the best of mothers not only kind to her kindred, but ever ready and willing to minister to others often denying herself of many of life's comforts to help others. She was a constant student of the Bible. It was her delight, and her Savior and her refuge and strength. Ti was her joy to be in revival meetings, often overtaxing her strength to be present and testify for Jesus. Her last night on earth was spent in a revival meeting in the Methodist church. She was in usual health in the evening. Coming into our home for a few moments as was her daily custom the the hour for church service drawing near, she said,"Come children, it is time to get ready for church," then stepping, it seemed more lightly than common, to her little home on the same lot she prepared and I accompanied her to church, taking the street car. At the close of the service a few minutes were given to testimony, The preacher's theme was "The Coming of Jesus." She gave a bright and exultant testimony, many eyes being moved to tears and sounds of praise were heard from different parts of the church. She said in her last words, "I an just waiting for Jesus to come for me". At the close of the service the car not being near, she desired to walk by my side as was her usual custom. She walked by my side holding my arm. Several times I asked, "are you tired mother," she said, "no." As we reached the door of her humble home Mrs. Phippin was awaiting her coming opened it and remarked, here is your daughter waiting for you, she made no reply, but as she raised her foot to enter she suddenly fell back into my arms and without a word was gone. She was the mother of nine children, three of whom died in early childhood, two sons, aged fourteen and sixteen drowned on the way from her home in Pennsylvania to Iowa, one son dying at Spirit Lake January 18, 1878. In February, 1906, she left her home of over forty years in Spirit Lake to spend her last days with her surviving children, Mrs. A. W. Middleton, Mes. F. F. Phippin and J. A. Ellis, now residents of Fort Collins. She will be laid to rest this (Tuesday) Afternoon in the Beautiful "Grandview Cemetery," Fort Collins. Twas sad to part with mother Without her last goodbye, But the parting is not forever We shall meet her bye-and-bye. She gave a bright and exultant testimony, many eyes being moved to tears and sounds of praise were heard from different parts of the church. She said in her last words, "I an just waiting for Jesus to come for me". At the close of the service the car not being near, she desired to walk by my side as was her usual custom. She walked by my side holding my arm. Several times I asked, "are you tired mother," she said, "no." As we reached the door of her humble home Mrs. Phippin was awaiting her coming opened it and remarked, here is your daughter waiting for you, she made no reply, but as she raised her foot to enter she suddenly fell back into my arms and without a word was gone. She was the mother of nine children, three of whom died in early childhood, two sons, aged fourteen and sixteen drowned on the way from her home in Pennsylvania to Iowa, one son dying at Spirit Lake January 18, 1878. In February, 1906, she left her home of over forty years in Spirit Lake to spend her last days with her surviving children, Mrs. A. W. Middleton, Mes. F. F. Phippin and J. A. Ellis, now residents of Fort Collins. She will be laid to rest this (Tuesday) Afternoon in the Beautiful "Grandview Cemetery," Fort Collins. Twas sad to part with mother Without her last goodbye, But the parting is not forever We shall meet her bye-and-bye. Yes, we'll meet you darling mother, Where all tears are wiped away, And with Christ and His redeemed ones With you forever stay. Ellis) and three older brother and myself (then 6 years old) left the wooded hills of northern Pennsylvania (Potter County) for Northwest Iowa. Our journey was by railroad from Andover, NY to Buffalo, from Fubbalo to Milwaukee, Wis by steamer, from Milwaukee to LaCrosse by railroad, thence by steamer to St. Paul, Minnesota from St. Paul to Mankato by barge or flat boat, thence by team via Jackson, Minn to Estherville, Iowa, where we arrived in September after a tedious trip of six weeks. We do not recollect very distinctly this trip but one sad event will never be effaced from our memory, the drowning of our two oldest brothers at a station between St. Paul and Mankato, where we stopped for a short time. They attempted to stop a row boat that was drifting down stream. Neither being able to swim and not knowing the river was deep they soon disappeared from our view, never to be seen again. Though but a child, we shall never forget the anguish of father and mother to be bereft of their children and, after fruitless efforts to find them, to continue on their journey and leave them to be found two weeks later, locked in each others arms and buried by strangers. When we arrived at Estherville and father paid the man for bring us from Mankato, he had only 60¢ left. But we found kind friends, Adolph Jenkins and Jerome Hopkins were our benefactors.
