Elliott Elected Council President
Coudersport's new borough council, meeting Monday night in the hose rooms for organization, rehired Robert T. Grabe as borough treasurer but tabled the resignation of John W. Mahaley, secretary-solicitor, until tomorrow night, pending further investigation. Mr. Mahaley had indicated he would accept the job again if his salary were increased about $1,000 per year.
Carl H. Roberts, Charles Upde-graff and John Karr were sworn in by burgess Mort. W. Levinson, who conducted the meeting prior to the election of James L. Elliott as president for the next two years. Mr. Elliott was in charge of the balance of the meeting which lasted from 8:00 o'clock until about 10:30.
Mr. Grabe, who. for years has served as trustee of the Schildeberger Estate as well as borough treasurer, will receive the same salary for the latter position $125 per year. He reluctantly agreed to continue as trustee of the estate after he had been assured that the borough will attempt to dispose of the two houses owned by the estate during this year.
Street commissioner Oliver Watson was re-appointed by the new council at the same salary, although he had requested an increase for himself and other borough street employes. Council members asked for time to study the budget before any salary or wage increases are granted.
It was also decided by the newly-organized borough governing body that regular meetings will be held the first Monday of each month at 7:30 in the hose rooms.
Committees named by Mr. Elliott include the following:
Street Mr. Karr, chairman; Mr. Updegraff, Mr. Watson and Tom Leete.
Lighting Owen E. Metzger, chairman; Mr. Roberts.
Safety Mr. Leete, chairman; Mr. Metzger and the borough's two police officers, Paul Hughes and Earl B. Smith.
Fire Mr. Updegraff, chairman; fire chief Arthur Nelson and Theodore Williams, assistant chief.
Borough sewers - Mr. Roberts, chairman; Mr. Karr, Mr. Metzger and Mr. Watson.
Library - Morton Lilly and Mrs. H. A. Dorfeld. (Note: The library board consists of seven members two appointed by the council, two by the school district and three elected at large).
Miss Frances I. Niles was retained as librarian at a monthly salary of $160. The appointment of a recreation ((continued on Page 4)

James L. Elliott
Elected president of the Coudersport Borough Council at its reorganization meeting Monday night in the hose rooms was James Leonard Elliott, 41-year-old lumber dealer.
A graduate of the Corning (N. Y.) Free Academy and later attending St. Bonaventure University, "Jim" has resided in Coudersport since 1936 and has been interested in the lumber business ever since. For several years, he was associated with his father, the late Dr. Leon Elliott, and his grandfather, and in 1946 took over what is now the James Elliott Lumber Co.
Mr. Elliott served in the Air Force for four years, was in the Azores for a year and in Newfoundland for a year doing air-sea rescue work. He was separated from the service as a warrant officer.

He has been on the council for two years and is a member of the Coudersport Recreation Board. As such, he was instrumental in the construction of Coudersport's new swimming pool in Mitchell Park.
Mr. Elliott is married to the former Miss Molly Ellis, of Henderson, N. C. With their four children-three boys and a girl they live on South Main St. in a home built by the lumberman a few years ago.

Edw. Weiss Faces Charge Of Hit-Run
Edward F. Weiss, 24, North Bingham, made double trouble for himself and before the new year had fairly gotten on its way.
Investigating State Troopers state that his car was smashed up to the extent of about $400 at 7:45 last Friday night a short distance above Burtville on Route 6.
Troopers explained he was rounding a curve at such speed he could not stay on fiis own half of the highway.
His vehicle, officers said, struck a car driven by Donald F. Baker, 56, of Genesee. Mr. Baker's vehicle was estimated to be damaged about $400. The young man failed to stop and identify himself.
The result was that Weiss was arrested and charged with two offenses: failure to stop at the scene of an accident and failure to identify himself.
Before Justice W. C. Klein he entered a plea of guilty to both charges and was committed to the county jail. Later he furnished bail to appear in court. Both charges are misdemeanors.
Wife of Sheriff Undergoes Surgery At Sayre
Mrs. Harold C. Holcomb, wife of Potter County Sheriff Holcomb, underwent surgery Monday in the Robert Packer Hospital, Sayre.
A report last night disclosed that she is doing "as well as can be expected."

These books include The Allegheny Angler (1963), The Eastern Trail (1972), Night Fishing for Trout (1972), America’s Great Outdoors (co-editor, 1976), Atlantic Salmon Fishing (1985), The Trout and Salmon Fisherman’s Bible (1991), and The Fly Fisherman’s Bible (1993).
Bashline used his writing to advocate for conservation efforts. He was a member of The Ruffed Grouse Society, the National Rifle Association, Trout Unlimited, and the Federation of Flyfishers. His other activities often contributed to his written publications, such as his work as a TV presenter, outdoor photographer, artist, and cook.
Sylvia Bashline was born on August 13, 1933, in Port Allegheny, PA. She was the daughter of Robert T. and Florence S. Grabe, and married Jim in August, 1952, after which her career closely mirrored that of her husband. The couple travelled extensively around the United States and Canada in order to gain first-hand experiences and practical knowledge that would enable them to publish so widely on outdoor activities. Sylvia contributed cookery columns and articles to many of the same publications as her husband, including Field and Stream and Pennsylvania Angler. Her published cookbooks include The Bounty of the Earth Cookbook (1979), Cleaning and Cooking Fish (1982), Sylvia Bashline’s Savory Game Cookbook (1983), The New Cleaning and Cooking Fish (1999), Fixin’ Fish: the Complete Guide to Cleaning and Cooking Freshwater Fish (2000), and The Fish and Game Cookbook (2000).
Both Jim and Sylvia held editorial positions at Field and Stream and directorial positions in OWAA (Outdoor Writers Association of America) and POWA (Pennsylvania Outdoor Writers Association).
About the James and Sylvia Bashline Papers
The James and Sylvia Bashline collection consists primarily of the published magazine and newspaper articles of Jim and Sylvia Bashline, between 1958 and 1995. The collection also contains a series of manuscripts of Jim Bashline’s book Atlantic Salmon Fishing, as well as various agreements between the Bashlines and their publishers. A small number of Jim’s drawn illustrations - primarily of flies and fish - are included, as well as hundreds of slides, negatives, color transparencies, and proof sheets. These depict the Bashline’s travels, outdoor activities, and cooking recipes, and are mostly arranged by genre. Many of these photographs were used in their publications, particularly in their regular Field and Stream columns. Finally, there are a number of videos of the series “Outdoor Profiles,” as well as CDs with 60 minute interviews between Jim Bashline and other prominent outdoor writers and activists.
