Information from: Roots Web's World Project: Daniel Goetzman Family Tree
Amanda was 18 years old when she married Mr. Purcell, boss over a gang of Irishmen on the Erie Canal. Olean said "Amanda was about as big as she (Olean was 4'11"), probably weighed 100 lbs, black as any Indian. Olean called her a "little black varmint" and said she was a scrapper. David and Amanda lived near the Seneca Indians. David's people called her "Old Black Hawk" whenever they got mad at her. She was of Holland Dutch with the dark coloring instead of light.

*Olean Melissa Cook was Amanda's granddaughter. Olean's mother was Lavina (Hall) Cook. Corrine McClure Moyers was Olean's daughter.
*Amanda's descendants are searching for any information on Amanda's mother. Even if it would only be her name. Our ancestors all deserve at least a name. She may have been of Indian descent, possible Mohawk. Within the above story there is a reference, "Amanda's dark coloring, that she of Holland Dutch". From some research; Holland Dutch aka Black Dutch; "some say the term was adopted as an attempt to disquise Indian or tri-racial descent".
Source of research: Rootsweb - "This and That of Genealogy Tips on Black Dutch, Black Dutch, Melungeons, Moravians, Pennsylvania".
**Below is a reference to the possible Mohawk linkage, I have underlined. Also from the above story "Memories of Amanda Garrison" there could also be a possibilty of a Seneca heritage.
A paragraph from the story of, "Valentine Hyde and His Family" (attached to those connected to the family). "The marriage of Valentine Hyde took place in 1871 when he was wedded to Miss Melissa A. Holl [Hall]. This union has resulted in ten children - Henry, Garrison, Vina (married), Fred, Susan (married), Roy, Guy, Stella, Leo, and Jessie. Mrs Hyde's parents were David Holl, a farmer and lumberman, and Amanda (Garrison) Holl, of Mohawk German descent.
**Valentine and Melissa actually had "12 Children". Gertrude and Albert both died in 1882 while they were still living in New York. Must have been some sort of an epidemic. Melissa's sister Orilla Anderson lost "4 daughters" that same year.

***Personal source: Story told by Amanda's granddaughter, Jessie (Hyde) Johnson to her granddaughter, Judy (Sautter) Dean - 1964, Huntington Park, Los Angeles, CA.
"My grandma Jessie showed me (Judy) a picture of an Indian women, said, she was our great grandmother, and was a "Indian Princess" or maybe she said, she looked like a princess, since the dress was beaded, light in color, she also wore a headdress".
So far, no one has found any information on Amanda's mother. I tend to lean on the idea, the Indian women in the picture was Amanda's mother. I am certain my grandmother, Jessie told me her name. However at that time I was young, and not interested in family history. I have no idea who might have this picture, now. I sincerely wish I did.
If any one would have an interest in helping the descendants search for Amanda's mother or know of the picture, you can contact one of us, either through our Ancestry username's or email address. Choose which ever you would be most comfortable with. Any help would be sincerely appreciated.
