Armed With Tommy Guns and Rifles They Force Gray Sedan to Stop Near West Pike-Leo Stiles, Known Locally, One of Trio Stiles Has Long Record Venango County Officers Come For Prisoners.
State police from the local barracks proved efficient once more Tuesday and they did it in jig time.
At 12:15 Tuesday, just at the noon hour, a teletype message was received stating that three men, probably traveling in a gray sedan, were wanted by Venango County authorities.
The message stated the men were wanted on robbery charges at Franklin and it warned the men were armed and dangerous.
Mansfield, Kane and Williamsport police were notified.
One of the men was identified as
- Leo Stiles, 35,
who had lived in the vicinity of Galeton. The criminal record of Stiles Is a long one. Once when arrested near the Brook-land Club he told the officers if they ever attempted another arrest they "had better come a-shooting." So Tuesday they were taking no chances.
While near the White Birch filling station, not far from Galeton, the troopers saw the wanted car pass traveling west. The police gave chase. They crowded the gray sedan to the side of the highway and hopped out armed with tommy guns and rifles.
The bad men wanted no part in shooting it out. They came out of the car with hands on their heads. At 2:30 it was all over. The trio was in custody Tuesday along with
- Harold B. Stiles, 33, a brother of Leo. Harold Stiles and
- Earl Mattison, arrested with the trio, were released yesterday morning as not implicated.
The companions of Leo Stiles were
- Norman T. Nickman, 20, Oil City, and
- Raymond D. Rivers, 21, Kennerdell.
As the arrests were being made,
- the Rev. F. M. O'Connell of Coudersport, and
- Roy Maurer of West Pike
were on the highway and came quickly to a halt when they saw the armed troopers and four men with hands on their heads.
In the glove compartment of the gray sedan was found an automatic revolver and in a cabin where they had lodged was a 32-special rifle.
The sheriff of Venango County and three troopers came for the wanted men and took them to Franklin, Tuesday night.
Stiles Has Bad Record
Police records show that Leo Stiles was arrested by
- Sheriff B. L. Van De Boe,
on a bootlegging charge in 1932. He entered a plea of guilty and was paroled for two years.
In 1935 he was arrested by State Police, then stationed at Galeton, on a forgery charge. He pleaded guilty and was sentenced to serve one to five years in the Western Penitentiary.
He was transferred to Rock View and escaped later. He was charged with stealing two cars in Lock Haven and was sentenced from Clinton County to serve five years in the Western Penitentiary.
In December, 1945, he was arrested for forging a check. He was given trial In March, 1946, and found guilty. He was sentenced to serve one to five years in the Western Penitentiary. He served three and one-half years and was released to a man in Franklin County in 1949.
In August of 1949 he was declared delinquent by the State Parole Board after passing a worthless check, and he was returned to prison in September of 1949. He was released from prison last December.
