OLDEST MASON OF LOCAL BODY DEAD
Walter Abson Passes Away Very Suddenly at Advanced Age of 88 Years.
Walter Abson, son of Anthony and Mary Hardwick Abson, was born July 14, 1846 in Yorkshire, England, and came to America in 1851 on the sailing vessel Columbia, being six weeks crossing the Atlantic. He lived in New York City until he was fifteen years of age when the family moved to Coudersport.
WALTER ABSON
He learned the carpenter trade, became a contractor and built many of the houses now standing in Coudersport. He built his own home in 1875 and lived there all the rest of his life.
He was married to Ella Wione Elliott, February 5, 1877. To this union were born four children:
- Mrs. Edith Gustwick of Coudersport.
- Mrs. Arline Farnsworth of Ulysses,
- Leone, who died at the age of 11 years, and
- son, Gleeford.
In 1880 he joined Eulalia Lodge, No. 342, F. and A. M., and at the time of his death he was the oldest member of the lodge.
Mrs. Abson died three years ago this month.
For the last year and a half his grandson, Walter Gustwick, and his wife, have lived with him and have helped to make his last days happy ones.
He died of heart failure at a little before five o'clock in the morning November 3. His death was very sudden and a great shock to everyone as he had been in the best of health. He worked until the very last day which was always one of his greatest desires and died without pain, as he had always hoped he would.
Surviving him besides his three children are
his two grandchildren,
- Walter Gustwick and
- Mrs. Wione Darrin of Coudersport;
