	20210214HAv- SATURDAY, DECEMBER 7, 2019 Thomas E. Fickinger Funeral Home celebrates 80 years of service On December 7, 2019 the Thomas E. Fickinger Funeral Home will celebrate 80 years of service to Coudersport and surrounding areas. In addition to being a funeral home for the past 80 years, the property at 210 North East Street is one of the oldest buildings in Coudersport, built in 1849, just one year after Coudersport was incorporated as a borough. To commemorate the event, a small gathering was held on Wednesday, November 20th, hosted by Bill Brennan, funeral director at Fickinger Funeral Home, and his wife Lisa. It was attended by family and friends associated with the Fickinger Funeral Home, along with local historians from the Potter County Historical Society and the E.O. Austin Museum. [Photo] The property at 210 North East Street, facing the courthouse square, was home to the Henry J. Olmstead family for over 85 years. The Olmstead family was remarkable in their roles as local leaders in government, education, and as merchants. Henry J. Olmstead himself played an important role in the election of Simon Cameron, the great orator and anti-slavery Republican, to the United States Senate in 1857. Although losing his left arm in a farming accident as a youth in Ulysses, Henry went on to become Principal of the Coudersport Academy, County Prothonitary, and also served in the office of the State Secretary of Pennsylvania. It was Henry J. Olmstead who transported an ailing Senator Issac Benson by sleigh to the train station in Wellsville, NY on January 5, 1857. Along with Dr. Ellison, he delivered Senator Benson to the state assembly in Harrisburg to cast the single vote needed to send Simon Cameron to Washington. The house itself, on the corner of North East and East 3rd streets, was a guidepost for run-away slaves seeking refuge within Coudersport’s Underground Railroad system. The transition of the property to a funeral home, came in December 7, 1939, when another prominent family, the Grabe’s, established the Grabe Funeral Service. George H. Grabe, the grandson of Gustave Grabe, whose sons Herman and Almon served the communities of Coudersport, Austin, and Port Allegany as funeral directors. Herman Grabe, father of George, worked compassionately in recovering and identifying victims of the 1911 Austin Flood, the same year that George Grabe was born. The Grabe Funeral Home was the center of emergency management with an ambulance service. In 1966, George formed a partnership with his son Thomas E. Fickinger. Lee Excerpt below is from a report published in the Potter Enterprise May 12, 1880. Isaac Baker Killed Last Friday about 5 o'clock, at Dr. O.T. Ellison's saw mill, a short distance above town, Isaac Baker of Eulalia township, was almost instantly killed by the large circular saw used in sawing lumber. For a short time past Mr. Baker had been working in the mill attending a small cut-off saw and occasionally assisted in jacking-in logs from the pond. Less than an hour before his death he had a very narrow escape, while putting on a belt that has slipped from its wheel, and he would have doubtless been drawn between the belt and the wheel in such a manner that it would have resulted in his death but for the interference of some of the mill hands who were better acquainted with machinery. After this he returned to the cut-off saw, where he was at work but a few moments when Joe Brown drove into the mill yard for a load of plank, as the plank had to be sorted, the man tail-sawing to assist Joe, and Mr. Baker took his place. The first slab that dropped from the saw as Mr. Baker took his place was a very heavy one, and instead of carrying it back and across the carriage track, he attempted to lift it over the saw, but in some manner the slab near the end caught the saw, and before he could let go, he was drawn upon the saw and thrown some eight of nine feet back, a mangled, quivering, old man with just life enough to gasp, "Oh, my God, take me off from here." A few gasps and his spirit returned to its Maker. When thrown from the saw, Mr. Baker struck upon the log carriage, which had been gigged back as soon as the slab fell from the log, his head striking some of the iron work, cutting a large gash in the top of his head and right temple. He was removed from the carriage to the mill floor, but never spoke again, and was dead almost as soon as the hands could reach him. Our reporter found the body lying on the mill floor, upon a blanket, with a pillow placed under his head, and the body partially covered, but still presenting a most horrible sight. He was lying on the left side, the left boot heel was torn off, the calf of the right leg was ragged where the saw teeth has cut almost to the bone, the clothes were half torn from the body. The saw had struck at the upper part of the hips, cutting through, at the small of the back, rather more on the right than on the left side, and passing up a little more than half way to the shoulders, leaving the internal organs exposed to view, somewhat lacerated by the saw. At the top of the head the scalp was torn loose, perhaps four or five inches square; the right temple was covered with blood and had the appearance of being crushed in, and was caused when he was thrown from the saw. The skull was doubtless fractured at the temple and the top of the head. Spots of blood and shreds of flesh were scattered about the carriage and later a piece of the back bone was found at the rear of the mill, where it had been thrown by the saw. The body was placed in a neat coffin and removed to his former residence, and on Saturday was interred in the Crandall Hill burying ground. The deceased was about sixty years of age, he leaves a wife who has been sick for some time and at the time of the accident was still unable to leave her bed, and several children, one or two grown up and the youngest we are informed about fourteen years of age. It would seen that the deceased had a presentament of his untimely end. Thursday he came very near drowning while working on the logs on the pond, and Friday as he was leaving the house he said to his wife, "I came very near being drowned yesterday. I suppose t0-day will finish me," The deceased served some time in the army during the late war, doing his duty as a soldier and has been a hard working, honest man. Isaac had 4 cousins, and 4 brothers-in-law in the war. Isaac's brother worked for the Military Railroad and was killed in some kind of an accident. Thomas E. Fickinger Funeral Home celebrates 80 years of service

On December 7, 2019 the Thomas E. Fickinger Funeral Home will celebrate 80 years of service to Coudersport and surrounding areas.

In addition to being a funeral home for the past 80 years, the property at 210 North East Street is one of the oldest buildings in Coudersport, built in 1849, just one year after Coudersport was incorporated as a borough. To commemorate the event, a small gathering was held on Wednesday, November 20th, hosted by Bill Brennan, funeral director at Fickinger Funeral Home, and his wife Lisa. It was attended by family and friends associated with the Fickinger Funeral Home, along with local historians from the Potter County Historical Society and the E.O. Austin Museum.

The property at 210 North East Street, facing the courthouse square, was home to the Henry J. Olmstead family for over 85 years. The Olmstead family was remarkable in their roles as local leaders in government, education, and as merchants. Henry J. Olmstead himself played an important role in the election of Simon Cameron, the great orator and anti-slavery Republican, to the United States Senate in 1857.

Although losing his left arm in a farming accident as a youth in Ulysses, Henry went on to become Principal of the Coudersport Academy, County Prothonitary, and also served in the office of the State Secretary of Pennsylvania. It was Henry J. Olmstead who transported an ailing Senator Issac Benson by sleigh to the train station in Wellsville, NY on January 5, 1857. Along with Dr. Ellison, he delivered Senator Benson to the state assembly in Harrisburg to cast the single vote needed to send Simon Cameron to Washington.

The house itself, on the corner of North East and East 3rd streets, was a guidepost for run-away slaves seeking refuge within Coudersport’s Underground Railroad system.

The transition of the property to a funeral home, came in December 7, 1939, when another prominent family, the Grabe’s, established the Grabe Funeral Service. George H. Grabe, the grandson of Gustave Grabe, whose sons Herman and Almon served the communities of Coudersport, Austin, and Port Allegany as funeral directors. Herman Grabe, father of George, worked compassionately in recovering and identifying victims of the 1911 Austin Flood, the same year that George Grabe was born.

The Grabe Funeral Home was the center of emergency management with an ambulance service. In 1966, George formed a partnership with his son Thomas E. Fickinger. Tom, along with his wife Barbara, continued to carry-on the tradition of service and compassion to area families.

At the anniversary gathering, the Fickinger Funeral Home, was filled with stories and memories by the late Thomas Fickinger’s wife, Barbara, and friends to pay tribute to the families and the dwelling that has served our community for these many years.

The Fickinger Funeral Home is looking forward to many more years of compassionate service to the community. We would like to extend an invitation to our Memorial Tree Service on December 10, 2019. Registration starts at 6pm and the service will start at 7pm. Please RSVP by calling 814-274-8888.

We will also be hosting a Cocoa with Santa on December 21, 2019 from 1-4pm for children and adults of all ages. This will be a free event and photo taking is welcomed.

We at the Fickinger Funeral Home, would like to open our doors to any small groups or organizations if they are in need of a meeting location, at no charge.

Lisa and I are very lucky to call Coudersport home, to live in a building with so much history, and to meet and get to know so many wonderful people.
