COUDERSPORT. POTTER COUNTY, PENN., THURSDAY MORNING, JULY A GREAT CELEBRATION, HELD IN COUDERSPORT - Fine Weather Prevailed and a Big Crowd Turned Out.
Chapin Wins Marathon Race.
Drake Was Speedy.
... five contestants showed up, they being:
- Victor Marshall, Coudersport;
- Charles and W. Melkle, of Galeton;
- Sherman Chapin, of Port Allegany;
- Dorr Smith, Gold.
The course was over two: squares bounded by Allegany Avenue, Borie street, Maple street and East street- it requiring twenty rounds to make up the 10 miles. .;. war . '.t A.ftar.HieiMg numbered'. men started; off in a bunch and .for the first four miles they, kept well- together, but on the fifth mile Charles Meikle found the : pace too swift for him to maintain and so dropped out after he had run 4 1-2 miles. Chapin, the Port Allegany lad, who had quite a record as a runner and who was the betting favorite in the race, took the lead in the eleventh lap, and gradually increased his speed and showed his heels to those who had been pushing him up to that time. He seemed to know his ability and only smiled at the others' efforts and he came in by nearly a half lap ahead of Smith, the Gold boy, his time being 1 hour, nine and a half minutes . Chapin, however, made the distance in an hour flat. Smith, the Gold boy, ran a plucky race and came In second, but Chapin outclassed him in speed. Marshall entered tha race without much graining for the event, and considering everything did remarkably well. He walked the last three laps and at that beat out W. Melkle. for third place by half a lap. The starting and finishing mark was at the intersection of Allegany Avenue and Fast street. Many hundred people witnessed the Marathon race. Earlier in the afternoon there were several other sprinting events pulled off on -the east side of tho Court House square which attracted much attention.
The first event was the 100 yard dash, and there were so many entries that it had, to be run in two sections, with a third heat to determine - the victors. In the first section Walter Gordnier, of Coudersport, finished by a 3 yard lead, Scott, of Coudersport, being second and Eggler of Galeton, third. Time, 111-2 seconds. In the second heat Herbert Drake, of Coudersport, was first, Saxe and Gridley, of Galeton, second and third. Time, 10 1-2 seconds. In the final heat, Drake, Gordnier and Saxe finished in order named. Time, 10 1-4 seconds. Drake run a pretty race in both heats.' There were six entries In the, 220 yard dash which was run in the fast time of 22 ,seconds, the winners being Drake of Coudersport; Chapin, of Port Allegany; Gridley of Galeton.
