Brothers Shot and Wounded By T, B. Wise Two Years Ago At Ceres Plaintiffs In Action Instituted In Dauphin County.
A State trooper, formerly attached to the Coudersport barrack has been made defendant in a $100,000 suit, legal aftermath of the arrest and shooting of three brothers about two years ago at Ceres. I Action has been brought against ;T. B. Wise by Glenn, Frank and Raymond Mattison, tried and convicted in court here on six counts of burglary, Jan. 9, 1948. All were sentenced to terms in the Western Penitentiary. Glenn recently was released after serving about a year and paroled to a Gold farmer. In making the arrest, the trooper shot and wounded the brothers. Raymond, alleged leader of the trio, was the most seriously wounded. He is a partial cripple as a result. Frank and Glenn were wounded by the same slug fired from the trooper's gun. Suspected of complicity of a series of thefts In the New York-Pennsylvania border area, the brothers had been sought by police of both States when they were sighted near Ceres. Stopped by Troopers Wise and Robert Baughman for questioning, Raymond, the police said, reached for a loaded rifle in the back seat of the car the Mattisons were driving. The shooting followed. Police had been warned, it was reported at the time of the incident, that the brothers were dangerous and probably armed. '.The suit, a trespass action, has been filed in Dauphin County Court. Mr. Wise is stationed at Harrisburg. Jhe- Mattison case attracted the attention of Herbert A. Maris, famed Philadelphia corporation lawyer whose efforts on behalf of convicted criminals were revealed several years ago in a Reader's Digest article. Mr. Maris, who is credited with helping in the successful fight to save George Henry Chapman, "pretty please" wife slayer from the electric chair, is believed to be behind the current action against Mr. Wise. Mr. Maris' associate, a retired Maryland manufacturer and former client of the lawyer, has been in the county at least five times investigating the circumstances surrounding the shooting of the brothers.
