Nickname: "Whistling Jesus" due to the fact that he always whistled hymns.
"Came to Coudersport, as grandmother said 'with only a horse, wagon and a suit of clothes' and worked for his future father-in-law, Charles. H. Armstrong, for whom I was named, in his grocery store across the street from the front of the Courthouse."

"E. Stevens, Retired, Dies From Old Age
Many Years Engaged in Grocery Business - Funeral Held from Home Yesterday.
The general breaking up of old age caused the death of E. C. Stevens at his home early Sunday evening, after a ten days illness, although he had been in failing health for several years.
A native of Cuba, N. Y., he was the oldest child of Albert A. and Emily Richardson Stevens and was born Nov. 23, 1854.
His parents later lived in Portville and Ceres, N. Y., and during his young manhood he came to Coudersport where he has since resided.
On Oct. 24, 1883, he was married to Amy Armstrong, who survives.
He and his father-in-law, the late Charles Armstrong, conducted a grocery store on Second street for some years and later Mr. Stevens owned and operated a grocery store on Main street. He also operated an insurance business for a time.
Surviving besides his wife are five children:
- Mary Hendryx,
- Alice Huber,
- Miss Florence Stevens, Rochester,
- E. Jane Kendall, and
- Walter A. Stevens,
One daughter, Ruth Musgrave, died some years ago.
Surviving also are
- a sister, Mrs. Minnie S. Peck, Los Angeles, Calif., and
- a brother, Irvin H. Stevens

"Retired Merchant Claimed by Death
Edward Clarence Stevens, well known local resident, passed away at his home on First street, Sunday after an illness of ten days. Cause of death was given as old age.
Mr. Stevens was born November 23, 1854 in Cuba, N. Y., son of Albert A. Stevens and Emily Richardson.
He was married to Amy I Armstrong on October 24, 1883 at Coudersport and the couple resided here since that time.
The deceased was a former resident of Cuba, Portville and Ceres, N. Y., and made his home here since November, 1883 where he followed the mercantile and insurance trade. He had been retired for the past ten years.
Surviving are his wife and five children:
- Mrs. Frank Hendryx, Coudersport;
- Alice Huber, Corning, N. Y.;
- Florence Stevens, Rochester, N. Y.;
- E. Jane Kendall, Auburndale, Mass., and
- Walter A Steven [sic[ of Maywood, N. J.;
- also a sister, Mrs. Minnie S. Peck, Los Angeles, Calif., and
- a brother, Irvin H. Stevens of Coudersport.
Mr. Stevens was a member of Park Methodist church.
Funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon at the Stevens home with the Rev. Howard Vernon Moses, pastor of Park church officiating.
Interment was in Eulalia Cemetery."
