• BOY SCOUTS NOW 30 YEARS OF AGE
Coudersport Area First Had Part in Organized Movement in 1926.
This year marks the 30th anniversary of the Boy Scouts of America. Since the start of the Boy Scout movement on Feb. 8, 1910, nearly nine million boys have enjoyed the thrilling adventures, the benefits of outdoor life and the opportunities for giving assistance to others which Scout work provides. Today, there are more than 40,000 troops of Boy Scouts and 800 organized camps located in every territory and possession of the United States as well as every state in the Union.
Coudersport district area became an official part of the McKean-Potter-Cameron Council, Boy Scouts of America, at a meeting of the executive board held July 29, 1926. With the advent of this territory the area was McKean-Potter Area Council. Those men responsible for this progressive step in Scouting were
James Covey,
Dr. R. W. Richards,
George Martin,
E. P. Huntington and
U. D. King.
The units or ganized consisted of Troop 24, Austin; Troop 28, Shinglehouse; Troop 29, Roulette; Troop 30, Ulysses; Troops 31 and 32, Coudersport, and Troop 33, Galeton, with a total enrollment of 78 boys.
Through the years some of these units have fallen by the wayside and boys in certain communities have been denied the privileges of the program. It is a sincere desire that those interested in this program lend their efforts to the cause of giving every boy in every community in our area the opportunity to become a Scout, then, too, in an effort to increase the number of years a boy stays in the program, we have to look toward the organ ization of a senior program, namely Sea Scouting or Explorer Scouting.
The younger boy program for boys 8, 10 and 11 years of age, known as Cubbing, does not exist anywhere in this territory with the exception of a few Lone Cubs in the area of Ulysses. The desire for Cubbing prevails and this program, too, we desire to stimulate.
Scouting is carried on in Coudersport District Area through the efforts of
- Willis K. Elliott, vice president of Potter County;
- Harry Elliott, district chairman and chairman of advancement committee;
- Willard Hauber, district commissioner;
- A. W. DuBois, finance chairman;
- Dr. Ross Jones, member of advancement committee;
- Gerald Thomas, publicity chairman, and
- Judge R.R. Lewis, honorary vice president and owner of the property at Seven Bridges which is used by the entire council for organized camping.
The troops existing in this area are:
- Troop 31, Coudersport. Sponsored by the Knights of Columbus. R.E. Mosher, Scoutmaster, and Paul Moran, chairman.
- Troop 32, Coudersport. Sponsored by the Methodist Church. Ralph Johnson, Scoutmaster, and John Roth, chairman.
- Troop 29, Roulette. Sponsored by the Roulette Methodist Church. Rev. Henry Andresen, Scoutmaster, and Olen D. Dexter, Chairman.
- Troop 43, Galeton. Sponsored by Octogon Post, No. 291, American Legion. W. Gale Lush, Scoutmaster, and D.C. Chamberlain, chairman.
- Troop 57, Shinglehouse. Sponsored by the Men's Brotherhood of the Methodist Church. Alford Dibble, Scoutmaster, and R. Lloyd Jones, chairman.
- Troop 24, Austin. Sponsored by the Bailey Run Hunting Club. Rev. H.W. Witchey, Scoutmaster, and W. G. Haupt, chairman.
- Troop 44, Gaines.Sponsored by the Pine Creek Sporting Club. Harry P. Dewey, Scoutmaster, and C. W. Rexford, Chairman.
In addition to the troops listed above there are Lone Scouts and Lone Cubs in the Ulysses area.
UNITED IN MARRIAGE
In an informal ceremony performed at 8:00 o'clock Friday evening, May 3, in St. Matthew's Lutheran Church in Williamsport, Miss Elsye B. Rossman became the bride of Charles H. Updegraff, son of Mr. and Mrs. C. E. Updegraff of Williamsport.
The single ring ceremony was performed by the pastor, the Rev. Ira S. Sassaman, in the presence of rela tives and friends. Mrs. Sassaman presided at the organ, playing the traditional wedding music. ;
The bride, given in marriage by her father, wore a dusty rose red-ingote ensemble with blue accessories. Her shoulder corsage was of pink rose buds and lilies of the valley.
Her only attendant, her sister, Miss Jane Rossman, was gowned in a blue street length dress with dusty rose accessories. Her shoulder corsage was of white rose buds and forget-me-nots.

Paul Lynn Gardner Thanks, Paul. I showed these to Kathy earlier. Her father would have been in the US for three years at the time of the photo. I bet his English wasn't very good yet. He was such a wonderful man! It's so incredible to see him on Facebook!

When I started work at Denton Hill Ski Stanley "Ski-foot" Kowalski worked there as the Tannery had shut down a bit before. Within a few weeks all the bucks were showing the size of their antlers by picking (one hand)up a 100 lbs anvil by the horn (horn aimed to heaven). A few could pick it up for a minute or so then Mr. Kowalski stepped up. He had big hands and they must of been made of steel. He picked it up walked half way down the parking lot and back. Now he was retirement age at the time. Every mother's son who worked at the tannery was hard as nails. Not one easy job there. Everyone of those fellas should be shown respect for putting up with what they did to feed and take care of their families. Not many of them left and God Bless every last one of them. Real men who did real work.
