Obituary Marvin Ellsworth Snyder, Jr.
VIRGINIA BEACH- Marvin Ellsworth Snyder, Jr., 91, of Virginia Beach, went to be with the Lord August 31, 2014.
He was born in Dallas, Texas to the late Marvin and Mary (McMath) Snyder.
He was predeceased by his parents and
his sisters,
- Phyllis Snyder and
- Mary Ann (Holt) Hunter.
Three double cousins, who were like siblings to him, also preceded him in death. They were
- Wilma Snyder,
- Virginia Snyder O'Dell and
- Robert Snyder.
One double cousin, William R. Snyder, survives. (Their mothers were sisters and their fathers were brothers.)
Marvin Snyder was the valedictorian of his class (and of the county) at Terrell High School in Terrell, TX. He obtained a Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering from Southern Methodist University. He completed a course of study at Central Bible College in Springfield, MO and obtained a Doctor of Ministry degree from McCormick Theological Seminary.
Chaplain Snyder was a veteran of World War II. After being ordained as an Assemblies of God minister and pastoring churches in Indiana and Texas, he served in the U.S. Navy as a chaplain, attaining the rank of Captain. Locally, he served at the David Adams Chapel at the Norfolk Naval Station and at Chapel in The Woods at the Naval Air Station. His last sea duty was on the U.S.S.Eisenhower. After retiring from the U.S. Navy, he served as Assistant Director of Operation Blessing at the Christian Broadcasting Network.
Chaplain Snyder was a member of Glad Tidings Assemblies of God Church. He also was a member of the Norfolk Sports Club and was the chaplain for that organization for several years. He served as a volunteer in the Baseball Chapel ministry to the Norfolk Tides for several years.
Left to cherish his memory are his loving wife of 65 years, Eda Snyder;
children,
- Jonathan (wife, Julie) of Virginia Beach,
- Douglas of Virginia Beach,
- Mark (wife, Debbie) of Virginia Beach,
- Brent (wife, Tracy) of Hayward, CA and
- Mary Mathews (husband, Matt) of Magnolia, TX;
seven grandchildren and thirteen great-grandchildren.
A sister, Barbara Snyder Sinclair, also survives him.
Marvin Snyder was a wonderful example of Christian discipleship to his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held on Thursday, September 4, 2014 at 10:00 am at Glad Tidings Church, 301 S Newtown Rd, Norfolk, VA 23502. The family will receive friends at Rosewood-Kellum Funeral Home, 601 North Witchduck Road, Virginia Beach on Wednesday from 6 to 8pm.
Interment will be in Princess Anne Memorial Park in Virginia Beach.
