This photo, I would argue, is a better representation of who we were. This photo includes the extended family of Preacher Anse, as well as other members of his church and neighbors. My own great grandmother, Octavia Farley Hatfield, is the young girl in the white dress in the center of the group. This photo shows a congregation. This photo represents how those people thought of themselves. They are openly facing the world, celebrating the birthday of a man who ran both the local church as well as the local school (he had a school in his home and educated, among other people, your Henry Drury Hatfield who later became governor of West Virginia). These people are not afraid of the world. They are a family, a congregation, a community. I have often felt that, on some level, this photo was explicitly designed as an answer to the widely-circulated images of the Hatfield family, armed to the teeth and hiding in their "mountain fortress." Phoebe Vance Hatfield was a sister to Nancy Devil Anse Hatfield mother , and Jim Vance . She is Rebecca Chafin Hatfield, Levicy’s sister. On the 1910 census, she and her daughter were living with Anse and Levicy. She didn't live on Blackberry Creek in 1910 when this was taken, and this is mostly Preacher Anse's kids and some close neighbors - the Farleys and a few others.
