They were resting under a tree taking their lunch when an elderly man asked to sit with them. The old man was admiring Grandpa Nathanial's gun, it was a brand new ornately designed rifle with a silver filigree side-plates, and a walnut stock. He asked Grandpa if he would be willing to trade, and Grandpa said no. The old man didn't give up, he told him he was traveling back to Virginia to be close to his children since he was getting on in years and that he would be willing to trade even for the rifle for land in Kentucky. Grandpa made the trade for the land in Rineyville that day, where he built a cabin, and a family cemetery. The family of the old man went to court with the claim that the the agreement wasn't binding, but the court supported the transaction and decided in support of Grandpa.
