Randolph "Old Ran'l" Mcoy led the McCoy Clan and William Anderson "Devil Anse" Hatfield led the Hatfield Clan in the fued. William "Bill" Staton married, Nancy McCoy, Old Ran'l's niece. John's daughter, Sarah, married Ellison Hatfield, brother of Devil Anse Hatfield. In 1878 Old Ran'l McCoy accused Devil Anse's relative Floyd Hatfield of stealing a hog. Floyd was acquitted, in part, due to the testimony of William Staton. Presiding over the case was Anderson "Preacher Anse" Hatfield. In June 1880, William Staton was killed by two McCoy brothers, Sam and Paris, nephews of Old Ran'l, in revenge. Both McCoys were later acquitted on the grounds of self-defense.

Old William is not the one killed in the fued. His son Bill was. Sarah that md. Ellison Hatfield was William's daughter & another son Elliott was their brother, my 2nd g. grandfather.
