John McCoy was born on April 24, 1788, in Maryland or Virginia.
He married Margaret Jackson about 1808 in Knoxville, Tennessee.
They had ten children:
1. Nancy married William Staton,;
2. Rachel married James Ferguson;
3. William maried Sarah James;
4. Andrew married Nancy Justice;
5. Pleasant married Louvicy Chapman;
6. Randolph married Elizabeth Sansom
7. John "Buttermilk," married first Nancy Webb, and after she died, Lizzie Maynard;
8. Margaret married William Trigg Cline;
9. Elizabeth "Betty," married Peter Cline;
10. Asa Peter married Nancy Caroline Sansom, and after her death married Frances Muncy.

John and Margaret died the same day and are buried in a common grave on the cemetery across the creek and on the hill behind their log house. Family lore tells that they had always prayed together and had prayed that they would die together. As the story continues, John died that morning, Margaret helped plan the funeral, and died that night.

Randolph "Old Ran'l" Mcoy led the McCoy Clan and William Anderson "Devil Anse" Hatfield led the Hatfield Clan in the fued.
William "Bill" Staton married, Nancy McCoy, Old Ran'l's niece.
John's daughter, Sarah, married Ellison Hatfield, brother of Devil Anse Hatfield.
In 1878 Old Ran'l McCoy accused Devil Anse's relative Floyd Hatfield of stealing a hog. Floyd was acquitted, in part, due to the testimony of William Staton. Presiding over the case was Anderson "Preacher Anse" Hatfield.
In June 1880, William Staton was killed by two McCoy brothers, Sam and Paris, nephews of Old Ran'l, in revenge. Both McCoys were later acquitted on the grounds of self-defense.

Old William is not the one killed in the fued. His son Bill was. Sarah that md. Ellison Hatfield was William's daughter & another son Elliott was their brother, my 2nd g. grandfather.

Floyd Hatfield was born slower than his siblings and, unmarried, lived with his mother and his brother Kirk until his death.
According to family lore, Floyd's mother Sarah Staton Hatfield claimed that Floyd was "marked by a wild boar." Sarah said this because one day, after quarreling with her husband Ellison and pregnant with Floyd, she ran into the hills to gain some solitude. At some point she met a boar that chased her until she fell and ripped her dress. Upon giving birth to Floyd she realized that he had the "mark" of this animal.
