Interesting. I thought it was gone by then. I can remember in the 50's Mom showing me where the factory was. There were only a few remains of the banked up buildings that you could see from the road at the time...When did it officially close?....b

Hi Grace. I haven’t forgotten about those pictures. My great grandfather Goodrich Haven, who was the son of someone you are familiar with, had a brother, Benjamin Haven, who drove a wagon and team that hauled nitroglycerin out of Howard Junction, McKean County, Pa. On 22 Jan 1922 his wagon hauling over 300 quarts of nitro exploded killing him and his team of horses.

Yes. He was married and had a daughter, Elva Haven who married Walter Eddy. They lived 2 houses away from the Haven Homestead which still stands at 1021 High St. where my mom was born, was the home of my grandfather, Martin Haven, and was home to at least Goodrich and Martin Luther Haven as well as Ida May Turner Haven. That was all part of the Haven farm which went all the way to Howard Junction and was originally owned by B. C. Haven who came from Connecticut.

Kevin Newton Cool ! You know I do not have a death date for Ida ? Turners started in Conn, also, then Davenport, NY, then Erastus and some of his siblings ended up in Mashburg/Coryden area.

Wish the old articles were easier to read, I know Ernest was one of the last ID'd, also I think there are only 10 names on the monument where all reports said 11 were killed and that is what the original marker said also. You are welcome, the more we share the more our family history carries on to the younger generations.

If you want to read more look in the old Lancaster pa newspaper usually listed under dynamite explosion. It happened in 1906. I also have a small item from newspaper saying "Ernest Maxson went to Eldred after a load of dynamite, Saturday." This from a paper in 1898.

Grace Titus Maybe the 11th is the one man who was able to be identified by a wrist scar so he was buried separately.

Donald Adams A bit of truth in family stories, Aunt Flora always thought Ernest and his team were buried in a cigar box and looked for them for yrs. Sadly, in reality it sounds like he was with his team and that they could have been buried in a cigar box....am glad they (men) have a nice marker in Ephrata.

Grace Titus In all my research I have not found the "news" when Ernest was identified. Two of the three unidentified were hired just a few days before the explosion and were from a nearby town No one that I read about was identified by "pieces." but by "who was missing.".. And I suspect that remains could have fit in a cigar box if all remains were buried in one coffin. Ernest would have been 22, the other two were called "boys.". Wonder how many others were innocent kids.....b.

Donald Adams As young as 17 yrs, somewhere Ernest was listed as a foreman so I would assume he has been on the job for a while.....doubt those close by had temporary insanity or hearing loss!

Eldred world war 11 museum has some information on the Dynamite plant. They were still making dynamite in 1965 when I was buying it from them.
