Families of Rockingham Co. Virginia
1700-1800's , Rockingham County, Virginia
Carrier family's ancestors in Virginia
DOVE Henry Taube or Doub is recognized as the earliest ancestor of the Dove family in Virginia. It is believed that "taube", which is pigeon, or dove in German, was anglicized to "Dove" when they arrived in America. This family intermarried with the Criders, Whetzels & Rigglemans. There were quite a few liasons sbetween the Dove & Riggleman families where two people were "not quite married". Some of their children used Dove while some used Riggleman as their last name. One of our ancestors was Judith Riggleman (1810-1893). Her father was Aaron Dove & her mother was Sarah "Sallie" Riggleman. She is listed in court records as the "illigitimate daughter of Aaron Dove", and used her mother's last name.
WHETZEL The Whetzel family has its origins in Switzerland. Members of the family fled Switzerland because of religious persecution, settling first in the Palatinate of Germany & later in America. They were Lutherans. The name Whetzel (Weissel) means one who sharpens cutting instruments. Martin I, born in Germany, arrived in Philadelphia Sept. 21, 1731 on the ship "Brittania". His son, Martin II (Marten Weissel) is listed with his brother on the ship "Queen Elizabeth", arriving in Philadelphia Sept. 16, 1738. There are records of Martin I selling his farm, in Frederick Co. Maryland, to Martin II in 1749. Martin Whetzel II then settled in Brocks Gap in 1760. Martin II's son, Henry, born 1735, had 48 acres on Whistlers Run, Brocks Gap (29 Miles north of the Court House). This was on Crab Run at Jacob Crider Hallow.
HOTTINGER Michael Honinger was our immigrant ancestor. He arrived in Pennsylvania in 1729. He was the father of Conrad Honinger, who married Catherine Kutz. Conrad anglicized the name by changing it to Hottinger. Early in their marriage Conrad & Catherine moved to Rockingham Co. where they had 9 children. One of their sons married Elizabeth Yankey, while a daughter, Magdaline married Michael Yankey (our ancestors).
YANKEY The Yankey family descends from a Michael Jenghe I (our ancestor) who traveled from Berlin, Germany & settled in Virginia. His only known son, Michael Yankee II settled in Shenandoah County where he was the father of five children, one of whom was Michael Yankey (1775-1830). He married Magdaline Hottinger. Michael & Magdaline (our ancestors) moved to Brocks Gap about 1800.
The Carrier line shows all these families coming together when Sarah Yankey (1833-1890) married William Henry Carrier (1831-1896), a first cousin. Their son was William Henry Carrier (1860-1933), great grandfather of Mary Moore Turner.
Old Crider's Cemetery: Sarah "Sallie" Riggleman (born 1785, married to George), John Riggleman (1770-1850), Barbara Whetzel Riggleman (1770-1850, married to John) at Criders, Virginia
Directions: From Harrisonburg, VA - Rt 42 North to Broadway to Rt 259 (Brocks Gap Rd) go west, past Fulks Run Grocery to Rt 820 (Bergton Rd) Turn left on Rt 820, continue to 826 (Criders Rd) turn Left. Go about 5 miles. The cemetery is below the hill of the current Caplinger Cemetery at Criders.
New Caplinger Cemetery in Crider, Virginia: Jacob Jankey Sr. (1790-1876), Sarah "Sallie" Hottinger, wife of John Hottinger, dau. of Henry & Barbara (Whetzel) Hottinger.

Martin Jr.'s will
Martin Sr. and his wife Barbara moved 15 miles southwest of Winchester, VA. Frederick County, VA court records note that Martin Wetzel [Martin Sr] died August 6, 1760. His will appoints his son, Henry ("his oldest son born in this country"), and his second wife, Eva, as administrators and heirs of his 400-acre farm. Henry took over the 400-acre farm which Martin Sr. had purchased from Jacob Fink, who had it surveyed in 1752. Another set of buildings was occupied by John Whetzel, who later moved to Big Wheeling Creek (now in WV) with the Lewis Bonnett family. The farm was then sold and Henry moved to Shenandoah County near his brother, Nicholas. Some of his Henry's children were born or married there.
Martin Jr. lived in the Brocks Gap area of Rockingham Co., VA. Martin Jr. had sold some Maryland property in 1753 to Daniel Lefever. Per Augusta County court records, he bought land on the upper North Fork of the Shenandoah River (now Criders) from Thomas West on November 15,1760. Martin was married to Elizabeth Crommerston. Henry helped Elizabeth with some "affairs" in settling up Martin's estate when his will was declared invalid. Martin was considered "insaigne " when he made it. Henry was declared an "heir-at-law" of Martin's estate.

From Lewis Yankey book, "The Whetzel Family"
Henry Whetzel estate of 48 acres was on Whistlers Run, Brocks Gap, 29 miles north of the Court House. This was on Crab Run at Jacob Crider Hallow.
Have never found the origin of the 100 acres of Henry Whetzel on Crab Run. It was likely never formally patented to him and only occupied and used by him all his lifetime in Brocks Gap. This is indicated by the fact that where the land as 156 acres descended to his son Jacobs son Pearson Whetzel in 1849 had the same plus some adjoining vacant lands resurveyed as 175 acres and patented to him (Survey Book p377) where described as located as east of the 48 acres of Henry Jr. These tax records name all 5 sons of Henry Whetzel, Henry Jr, Peter, John, Martin Jr., and Jacob.
The land of Henry Whetzel in 1789 land tax was 104 acres value 13 pounds. Same 1793 in the entry book on page 59.
In the 1798 land tax of Henry Whetzel 104 acres value $42 and new patent 48 acres value $21. Later this 48 acres belonged to his son Henry Jr. This land adjoined the 104 acres. This new survey of 48 acres was made in 1791 from a 50 acre entry. The 1800 tithe or property tax list Henry Whetzel, 1 horse, and Henry Whetzel Jr. and 1 horse. Also Lists that the brothers of Henry Jr., John Whtzel having 2 horses, Peter having 2 horses and 1 stud, Martin with on horse and Jacob 2 horses.
In 1801 tax Henry called Sr. has 3 wthis in his home meaning 2 men over 16 besides himself.
In 1807 the 48 acres is assigned to Henry Whetzel Jr, value $23.
In 1810 tax lists Henry Whetzel Sr 104 acres value $43 and Henry Jr 48 acres value $23. Same in 1811.
In 1812 tax lists the same but the lands are located on Whetzels River (Crab Run). Same for Martin Jr. 97 acres. While Johns 79 1/2 acres are on Persimmon River, a branch of the Main Shenandoah river above Doves and Caplingers.
In the 1813 tax Johns land location is called Brocks Gap Germany.
In 1814 Henry Sr. and Jr are in "Brocks Gap Whetzels River" 29 miles north of the courthouse and John Germany 30 miles north.
This Henry Whetzel Jrs. 48 acres proves to be next above Doves on Crab Run at the present Jacob Crider house and John Whetzels 79 1/2 acres about a mile above Caplingers.
Henry Whetzel Sr died 1816 and 21 acres were laid off for his widow, the remainder of the 104 acres going to his son Jacob. Transfer showed in Rockingham County Deeds.
The 1817 tax has Jacob Whetzel 83 acres by Henry Whetzel's heirs 29 miles north. The widows dower is taxed under the name Henry Whetzel 21 acres value $73, buildings $17, and Jacobs 83 acres $290, buildings $85.
Note: date of death listed as 1794 or 1810-1816.
The "Old Henry Whetzel House" later his son Jacob's, later his son Pearson is shown on the 1885 atlas as P. Whetzel.

OUR BONNETT FAMILY
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
by Leon & Dee Henricks, April 1997
First Generation
The earliest ancestor found to date is Daniel Bonnett, born about 1658. It is not known if he was married more than once but the Church Book of St Evangile in the Wallonne settlement of Freidrichstahl, Baden, Germany tend to indicate that he may have been. As his children were confirmed, married or died, some are noted as a child of Daniel Bonnett and others are referred to as a child of Daniel Bonnett and Christine Cousine. Daniel had a least seven children. Daniel Bonnett's wife Christine, died in February 1731 or 1732 and Daniel died 4 September 1736.

Anna Marie was the young widow of Jean Corbeau and the daughter of Abraham Desreux and Judith Guerit. Her father Abraham was referred to as (Ancien....meaning Senior or the older of the two Abraham Desreux, she also had a brother named Abraham
7. Jean Pierre Bonnett, born about 1705, married Cherie Catherine La Exire in May 1721.
In 1733 Jean Jacques Bonnett, his wife and four children left Germany. One hundred ninty passengers, (fifty eight Palatines, their wifes and children totaling 172) plus crewmen and Captain Edward Lee sailed from Rotterdam to America via Dover aboard the ship Eliza of London, and arrived in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in August. It is noted that all of the Palatines (the senior proprietor of a province in an American Colony) including Jean Jacques Bonnett were recleared and requalified at the courthouse before the Honorable Lt. Governor and several magistrates on 27 August 1733. It is not known how long he served in this position but it is believed that they lived in Paoli, Chester Co., Pennsylvania.

In 1786 Samuel purchased 400 acres in Monogalia Co., (later became Harrison Co.) Virginia. In the fall of 1789 a tree fell and killed him. With nine children still at

Martha, born in December 1773, the daughter of Jesse David Hughes, Sr. and Grace Tanner.
It is noted on Martha's grave marker that she was captured by Indians in December 1787 and released and returned in 1790. Don't you just know she was so mad they couldn't control her. That away Grandmother, we love your spunk!

Correspondence from the estate of Jacob Bonnett to the War Department regarding his suspended pension, lists the children of Jacob and Martha. Jesse and Jacob H. Bonnett are not listed. Other Bonnett researchers say they are the sons of Jacob and Martha. Perhaps it was easier to omit than to locate them.
Samuel Bonnett married Eliza Linger on 24 December 1818 in Lewis Co., Virginia (later became West Virginia). Eliza died 15 October 1819, five days after her son was born.
Child of Samuel Bonnett and Eliza Linger

All of Samuel and Lucinda's children were born in Lewis Co., Virginia (later became West Virginia). In 1847 Samuel and Lucinda moved with their children (all but Martha Jane) to the Silver
Creek Township in Green Co., Ohio. In the fall of 1850 they moved to Marion Co., Iowa and in 1856 to Mahaska Co., Iowa. Samuel died in Mahaska Co. in November that same year. It appears he never had time to plant a crop in his newly purchased farm. Lucinda died in Mahaska Co. on 15 July 1881.

====================================================================
From Lewis Yankey book, "The Whetzel Family"
The old Souders said Jacob Whetzel, the youngest son of Henry, used to take his axe into Mine Mountain and shop pieces of lead from the cliffs to make bullets for his hunting gun.
On Sept 24, 1816 Jacob Whetzel got a deed for 83 acres of the 104 acres of the estate of his father from the other 9 heirs.
On Sept 30, 1816, Jacob joined all the other heirs of Henry Whetzel in conveying Henry's 1/4 inducted interest in his father Martin's estate to Fredrick Dove not clearly described. This land being jointly owned by Fredrick and George Dove.
The 1817 tax lists "Jacob Whetzel 83 acres by the Henry Whetzel heirs" the remaining 21 acres remained in the estate as the widows dower who lived with Jacob according to the 1830 census. This land is listed in 1817 Rockingham Co. lists this land as 29 miles north of the Court house.Land valued at $290 and buildings at $85.The 21 acres set aside for the widow of Henry taxed at $73 for land and $17 for buildings. When she died between 1830 and 1840 Jacob owned the entire 104 acres of his father Henry located on Crab Run adjoining Philip Souder.
In 1820 and 1823 taxed Jacob Whetzel Sr. of Henry, 83 acres on Whetzels Run (Crab Run) by Deed of 1816 from the other 9 heirs of Henry Whetzel, houses $65, Henry Whetzel estate widows dower 21 acres $17, no separate houses.
The 1842 deed of trust book (16p432) shows Jacob as owning 3 tracts 83, 21, and 52 acres making a total of 156 acres adjoining Philip Souder on Crab Run.This new 52 acres survey is assessed to Jacob Whetzel Sr. in the 1847 tax as 52-7-25 acres. He is here called Jacob Sr. to distinguish him from the younger son of John Whetzel.
In 1847 tax Jacob Whetzel Sr. 52-1-25 including a new patent to him by a 1842 deed.
The 21 acres was still taxed to the Henry Whetzel Estate but removed after that and in 1848-49 tax Jacob Whetzel 94 acres $253, buildings $150, 29 miles north of the Court House, true number of acres after a resurvey. In 1851 Jacob Whetzel 94 acres Crab Run, Brocks Gap. He conveyed 62 acres of his 156 acres to his son Pearson Whetzel between 1842 deed and 1848 tax.
In 1849 Pearson resurveyed this land as 175 acres, 19 acres more than before occupied adjoining east of the 48 acre Henry Whetzel Jr. tract (survey book p377). This included the 104 acre (83+21) Henry Whetzel estate which had never been legally patented hence the resurvey and patent by Person Whetzel Sr, son of Jacob of Henry of Martin.
The 1850 census page 126 has Jacob Whetzel age 70+, his wife Polly Pelse born 1785 living with his son Pearson Whetzel born 1827 and his wife Nancy Crisman born 1829 and their daughter Susie born 1848.
1850 census list Jacob Whetzel, could not read or write.
