RUPP, ISRAEL DANIEL. A Collection of Upwards of Thirty Thousand Names of German, Swiss, Dutch, French and Other Immigrants in Pennsylvania from 1727 to 1776, with a Statement of the Names of Ships, Whence They Sailed, and the Date of Their Arrival at Philadelphia, Chronologically Arranged, Together with the Necessary Historical and Other Notes, also, an Appendix Containing Lists of More Than One Thousand German and French Names in New York prior to 1712. Leipzig [Germany]: Degener & Co., 1931. 478, 89p. Reprint of the 2nd revised and enlarged ed., 1876, with index from 3rd ed. by Ernst Wecken, 1931, and added index of ships. Reprinted by Genealogical Publishing Co., Baltimore, 1985. 583p.
Source Annotation:
An index by Marvin V. Koger, Index to the Names of 30,000 Immigrants...Supplementing the Rupp, Ship Load Volume, 1935, 232p. is inferior to Wecken's index in the third edition (above). Page 449 contains "Names of the First Palatines in North Carolina, as Early as 1709 and 1710"; and pages 449-451 contain "Names of Males, Salzburgers, Settled in Georgia, 1734-1741." Contrary to some opinions, this work by Rupp does not duplicate nos. 9041-9042 by Strassburger, although there are thousands of names which are duplicates. Strassburger's work, however, is more accurate and more reliable than Rupp's. See also no. 9330, Urlsperger. The Salzburgers mentioned above were immigrants from Salzburg, Austria.

Source Annotation:
Contains 29,800 names, with annotations written by Krebs (see no. 4203). Various references to the names in Strassburger will be found in other listings, mostly where authors have attempted to line up their information with that in Strassburger. This work (often referred to as Strassburger and Hinke) is much superior to no. 7820, Rupp, and no. 1804, Egle. It forms a revision with additions to Rupp and Egle, and was prepared and edited with great accuracy. Vol. 1 contains captains' lists, 1727-1775; vol. 2 has facsimiles of all signatures of signers of oaths of allegiance and oaths of abjuration, and was not included in the G.P.C. reprint; vol. 3 has captains' lists from 1785-1808, and indexes to captains, ships, ports of departure, and surnames in all volumes. The set was originally vols. 42-44 of the Pennsylvania German Society Proceedings.

Notes for DANIEL ARTHUR HEPFER:
Per tax rolls of Franklin Co., PA - 1843:
Daniel Hepfer, Guilford Twp., no land, 2 horses, 2 cows, tax value $450.00, house, lot.
Per "The History of Franklin County," by Warner, Beers Inc. 1887, p. 575-576: There is a discussion of the Lutheran and Reformed Churches at Grindstone Hill. Daniel Hepper is listed as one of the early Sunday School Superintendents at the Lutheran Church - 1842/43. On p. 604, H. L Hepfer is listed as a member of Stevens Post No. 317 of the G.A.R. On p. 529 W. J. Hepfer is listed in the Sons of the Veterans of the United States Army as picket guard. On p. 352, Peter S. Hepper is listed as Commissary Sgt. of Co. L of 182nd Regt. 21st Cavalry.
According to the "Franklin County Cemetery Locator" by James Houpt, Jr. the present Grindstone Hill Cemetery is also called Solomon's Evangelical Lutheran Church Cemetery.
Per Sue Cramer research - 1996: Many more Hepfers are being found in the census records of Franklin Co., Pennsylvania. Stephen Hoepffer/Hepfer, Jr. who resided very near Daniel, had many children and can be traced to the Hepfers of Berks & Lebanon Co., PA. His father Stephen Hepfer (Hoepffer) emigrated from Germany on the ship Betsey in 1765. These immigrants appear to have come from Wurttemberg, Germany (the Black Forest region).
1830 Census - Guilford Twp., Franklin Co., PA - 2 doors down from Frederick Hoffman - Daniel Hopfer

1840 Census - Guilford Twp., Franklin Co., PA - just a few doors from John Tritle and Adam Bonebrake - Daniel Hepfer with 3 sons, 4 daughters & wife.
1850 Census - Guilford Twp., Franklin Co., PA - (next door to John Tritle) - Daniel Hepfer (Mary Fox, mother of Rebecca is listed as 76 years old and living with them). Lists: Daniel Hepfer (42) farmer b. PA, Rebecca (43 b. Maryland, John (20) laborer b. PA, Charlotte (19) b. PA, Matilda (17) b. PA, Daniel (16) b. PA, Rebecca (13) b. PA, Ann (11) b. PA, Jerome (9) b. PA, Peter (7) b. PA, Eliza (5) b. PA, Henry (2) b. PA, William (1) b. PA, Mary Fox (76) b. Maryland.
1860 Census - Jackson Hall, Guilford Twp., Franklin Co., PA - Next door to John N. Tritle, 2 doors from where Henry & Daniel's daughter Charlotte resided.

Per the History of Grindstone Hill Church: Daniel A. Hepfer was an Elder of the Grindstone Hill Evangelical Lutheran Church, Guilford Twp., Franklin Co., PA in 1854.
Per Karla Wingert (Hepfer descendant): "From what I can gather, Daniel A. & Rebecca were Lutherans in a strong Pennsylvania Dutch area. Franklin County is not exactly "Pennsylvania Dutch (Deutsch) country, as we think of it. Many German emigrants to this country were Lutheran, so I don't think their Lutheranism was an exception. Lancaster and Lebanon Counties are strongholds of the 'Pennsylvania Dutch' who are, of course, PA German. Many Amish and Mennonites in those counties! But there are also many Mennonites in Franklin Co. In my cemetery trudges, many of the graveyards were either Mennonite or Lutheran. The only religion based principle I heard of was Daniel J. Hepfer's strict injunction that when his son David married a Catholic, no one was allowed to communicate with him. As a child I went to summer Bible school in Marion, the small town between Chambersburg and Greencastle and now accessible from Rte. 81 as well as Rte. 11. Lutherans and Mennonites and other 'plain' people as we called them, mingled quite happily together and learned the Bible lessons.
Obituary (Tuesday, May 29, 1877): Died - On the 18th, Mr. Daniel Hepfer of Grindstone Hil, aged 70 years, 4 months and 13 days.
