John Wetzel: his wife Johanna is not named in his will- she died sometime after 1800 when she was a baptism sponsor of a child born to her daughter Elizabeth, and before her husband wrote his will.
John Wetzel was a prominent local figure in the Revolutionary War period. In 1774 he became a King's Justice and in 1775 he was a delegate to the Provincial Conference of June 18th. He was elected to the first assembly on 11-05-1776, and on 05-16-1777 he was appointed Lieutenant of the county. In this office, by reason of his arbitrary actions, he is said to have caused extreme hardship for the Moravians and other non-resistant sects, as well as to officers of the militia.
John & Jane are credited with the founding of the East Macungie Union School in Lower Macungie Township.
John had been brought up as well as well as Charter members of the Moravian congregation of Emmaus, and was baptized his 18th year by Bishop Spangenberg before the entire congregation in Bethlehem June 1748. One can suppose that over the years he became what today we would refer to as a "super-patriot"-thushe came to disagree very strongly with those who felt life's problems could be resolved through peaceful means. ---------------------
On 5 Oct 2013, John Wetzel, was recognized for his contribution to the American Revolution by the Daughters of the American Revolution with the rank of COL. His DAR number is A209674. He was proved thru the lineage of his son Jacob Wetzel after more than 30 years of research by family & privately hired genealogists. This year at the 75th Family Reunion of Andrew & Maggie Gehres Wetzel's family in the State of Washington, we shall honor his memory, the memory of some researchers who've passed, and the remaining living researchers. God be praised.
