I am a descendant of Christina Wetzel who married Nicholas Woolf (var. spellings). I believe they were in Frederick Co., Maryland. Their daughter Margaret Woolf born about 1766 married John Westfall. That probably happened in the area that would become Harrison Co., Virginia and later would be part of West Virginia. Their son Stephen Westfall married Elizabeth 'Betsy' Morrison, 18 Jul 1818, in what was then Mason Co., Virginia. That area became part of Jackson Co., (West) Virginia in 1831. Their daughter, Jemima Westfall, married Chester S. Tenney on 2 March 1856 in Jackson Co., West Virginia. Chester died at the Battle of Cloyd's Mountain/Farm in May of 1864. Their daughter Elizabeth Ellen Tenney was my great grandmother. She had my grandfather by a Shamblin and then married William Henry Riffle 22 Nov 1888 in Jackson Co., West Virginia. She appears to have died between 1896 and 1900. I've never found a grave or death record for her. All that said there must be a much more recent relationship to explain the strength of our match. Attached is the tree as I understand it from Arthur Toothman, whose findings are in the library at University of WV in Morgantown. His thoughts are that there were three distinct, but related Wetzel contingencies in the tri-state area, one in Maryland, one in Virginia and one in West Virginia. Although they were distinct settlements, there were times when they gathered together, or visited each other, like a death in the family. He uses the example of Christina Wetzel Wolfe's death to explain how two distant Wetzel cousins could meet and have a child out of wedlock. Oral tradition in his family says that this child's father was a John WETZEL. Arthur examined all the John WETZELs in the tri-state area and concluded that the only viable option was below. The child was born to John Wetzel b. 6 Feb 1797 s/o Martin WETZEL & Mary COFFELT/COFFIELD and Mary Wetzel b 17 Apr 1813 d/o George WETZEL & Elizabeth SNOOK. John Wetzel was the nephew of Christina Wetzel WOLFE and presumably travelled there for his aunt's funeral. Mary had been born in MD, and was living with her parents in the area of extreme Western MD or eastern WV. In order for them to get together, it is assumed that members of her family were also attending the funeral, further encouraging our DNA findings of us all being related. The geography is compelling, because Preston Co., WV butts right up against Garrett Co., MD. I know for certain that the VA Wetzels are all descended from Henry WETZEL b 1740 in PA and d. 1816 in Rockingham Co., VA s/o Hans Martin WETZEL. For us to all be related, there has to be some explanation that includes someone from PA coming to the WV/MD area to connect my family. That's where the Johan Peter WETZEL b. 16 Apr 1732 in PA comes in. He was the s/o Jacob Wetzel below. The dates and places of his birth and death fit nicely with the Peter Wetzel who died in Baltimore Co., MD in 1788. Peter's wife had a bachelor brother who died in early 1789, and she was mentioned in his will as the widow of Peter Wetzel, living in MD. This family is dear to my heart, because Peter's sister Anna Maria WETZEL married my immigrant ancestor Johan Adam TRUMP!! So, I've got WETZEL DNA on both my paternal grandfather's and paternal grandmother's side of the family. But Uncle Paul's DNA is strictly the Hans Martin/Jacob WETZEL strain. Sooo..... just in case your head hasn't exploded yet, what I have compiled is a list of things we know and in red what to look for next. 23 Sep 1784 - Peter Wetzel lived in York Co., PA at time of purchase of a piece of Land called Manheim Town being part of Hookers Meadow Resurveyed and part of Jerusalem containing two hundred and twelve acres and one half acre by estimation situate in Baltimore County, for the sum of seven hundred fifty pounds current money. Land records detailing location of land, naming owners, etc. Isaac Day. Hookers Meadows Resurveyed, 213 acres. BA Pipe Creek Hundred, p. 3. MSA S 1161-2-14 1/4/5/45 Tax records from York Co., PA showing Peter Wetzel before 23 Sep 1784. Abt. 1784 - Peter Wetzel moved to Baltimore county, presumably to inhabit the new property. Tax records showing his residence in Baltimore Co. between 1784 & 1788. Bef 1789 - Peter Wetzel paid Isaac Day three hundred thirty pounds on the debt. 1788 - Peter Wetzel died leaving four hundred twenty pounds still unpaid on land. 11 Feb 1791 - Court ordered guardians to be appointed for Catharine, George and Michael Wetzel, being minors. George Tanner subsequently appointed their guardian. Orphan’s court records. Find out who guardians were. I am a descendant of Christina Wetzel who married Nicholas Woolf (var. spellings). I believe they were in Frederick Co., Maryland. Their daughter Margaret Woolf born about 1766 married John Westfall. That probably happened in the area that would become Harrison Co., Virginia and later would be part of West Virginia. Their son Stephen Westfall married Elizabeth 'Betsy' Morrison, 18 Jul 1818, in what was then Mason Co., Virginia. That area became part of Jackson Co., (West) Virginia in 1831. Their daughter, Jemima Westfall, married Chester S. Tenney on 2 March 1856 in Jackson Co., West Virginia. Chester died at the Battle of Cloyd's Mountain/Farm in May of 1864. Their daughter Elizabeth Ellen Tenney was my great grandmother. She had my grandfather by a Shamblin and then married William Henry Riffle 22 Nov 1888 in Jackson Co., West Virginia. She appears to have died between 1896 and 1900. I've never found a grave or death record for her. All that said there must be a much more recent relationship to explain the strength of our match.
