Roulette Girl, 17, Killed Instantly In Auto Crash
23-Year-Old Ex-Soldier Driver Suffered Serious Head Injury;
Hospitalized in Olean General;
Condition "Not So Good"
Funeral services were held yesterday afternoon for 17-year-old Miss Pauline L. Roberts, of Roulette, victim of an auto accident late Saturday night near Olean, N. Y.
A passenger in a car driven by Clair V. Boyer, 22, also of Roulette, Miss Roberts died almost instantly after the car skidded into a tree.
The driver is in Olean General Hospital with a serious head injury. His mother said yesterday afternoon that his condition was "not good."
Accident Near Olean Limit
The accident occurred one-half mile east of the Olean city limit on Route 17. New York State police said the car, westbound, skidded on a curve near King's greenhouse. The auto was nearly torn in two when it wrapped itself around the tree.
Brought here this week by Haskins Motors, the smashed auto was seen by many. "How anybody ever survived that one I'll never know" was one comment that seemed to sum up the general thinking of persons who saw the car. Ed.j
The driver and Miss Roberts were taken to the hospital in Westons Mills Volunteer Fire Department's ambulance. Miss Roberts was dead upon arrival at the hospital at 10:30 o'clook.. Mr. Boyer was unconscious.
Dr. William E. MacDuffie, Cattaraugus County (N. Y.) coroner, who investigated the accident with Corp. J. C. Murphy, attached to the Allegany barracks of the New York State police, issued a certificate of accidental death for Miss Roberts. Death was attributed to a broken neck and crushed chest.
Mr. Boyer, a former serviceman with four years in the U.S. Air Force, and the girl were en route to a dance at Olean, it was learned. They had left from Roulette earlier in the evening.
The 1954 model car belonged to the driver's brother, David, a member of the USAF and stationed at Sampson, N. Y., according to another brother, Harold, who came here from his home in New Albany, Ind., after learning of the accident.
Discharged from service on March 25, 1955, Mr. Boyer worked in a Buffalo, N. Y. automobile plant until the holidays, his brother, Harold, said. He had not worked since Christmas.
Miss Roberts, a junior in Port Allegany Joint School, was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Roland Roberts. She was born at Coudersport, R. D. (Hebron Center) on June 29, 1938. She was a member of the Methodist Church.
Surviving besides her parents are
five brothers, - Darwin W. Roberts,
- Marvin Roberts,
- William Roberts and,
- Joseph Roberts, all at home;
- Lawrence Roberts, Roulette, and
two sisters, - Mrs. Geraldine Norton, Biloxi, Miss, and
- Mrs. Arlene Stewart, of Roulette.
Pallbearers at her service, conducted by the Rev. Robert Grossman, pastor of the Roulette Baptist Church, were
- John Cotter, - Danny Cotter,
- William Grandin, - Robert Vanocker,
- Richard Phillips & - Donnie Bernard.
A prayer service was held at the Grabe Funeral Home at 2:00 o'clock. Burial was in Rathbone Cemetery, Coneville.

Funeral services were held yesterday afternoon for 17-year-old Miss Pauline L. Roberts, of Roulette, victim of an auto accident late Saturday night near Olean, N. Y.

School Head Sees Growth In Enrollment Figures Enrollment in Coudersport Joint School five years hence is expected to top 1,300 students, Arlton Grover, supervising principal, told the Rotary Club Monday noon. The present enrollment is 1,073, the educator said. Hie plight of the local school reflects a national picture of too many students for existing facilities and too few teachers, Mr. Grover pointed out. The bulk of the projected increase here will occur at the junior and senior high school levels, he said. He cited a need for at least 15 additional teachers within the next five-year period. The local system is short four teachers at present, the supervising principal asserted. Mr. Grover called for the cooperation of the community with members of the school board in the interest of a better school system. He singled out H. B. Von Nieda, past president of the jointure, for special praise. Rotary heard a letter of thanks from Mrs. Willard Hauber, school nurse, for the club's financial backing of a holiday welfare program. Vice president Henry E. Martinson conducted the meeting.

Annual Dinner Saturday Night Melvin Blair, of Erie, area representative of the Pennsylvania Department of Commerce, will be the principal speaker at the annual diimer of the Roulette Chamber of Commerce, Saturday night in the fire hall. Possibility that J. C. Millin, representative of the area development division of West Penn Power Co., also would be a speaker was voiced by Jack Close, former secretary of the Roulette C. of C. Mr. Close will give a report 'On the organization's achievements during the past year at the dinner. The affair is scheduled to get underway at 6:30 o'clock. Tickets are $1.50 per plate.
Seven In Car, None Hurt Ih Accident A sedan driven by Miss Shirley Treat, 19, R. D. 2, Coudersport, climbed a bank, rolled over and skidded down the road, some ten miles north of Galeton at 6:30 Tuesday morning. State police making the investigation stated the group was en route to work in the plant of the Galeton Production Co. when the mishap occurred, and reported the car as a "complete loss." It is evident that the passengers were packed in the vehicle so closely they could not be tossed about, and fortunately no one was injured. Troopers stated that Miss Treat will be charged with reckless driving before Justice Herbert Watson. They stated further that this is the second accident for Miss Treat in a few months with the vehicle listed in the complete loss class.
First Time Together With Sons For Holidays The family of Mr. and Mrs. John Milchuck of this place spent a very j
hanov holiday season together. For some years they have been scattered with their sons in military service and getting furloughs at different times. A le Stephen J. Milchuck, who has served four years, now stationed at Orlando, Fla., was home. Cpl. Donald F. Milchuck, serving in the Marine Corps now at Parris Island, Cpl. Joseph B. Milchuck, who has been discharged, were home. Stephen and Donald are leaving this week for their bases. Invited Guest At Executive Mansion Mrs. Dennis Qoodenough Jr., is in receipt an invitation from Pennsylvania's first lady, Mrs. George Leader, attend a tea from 3:00 to 5:00 Friday, Jan. 20, at the Executive Mansion, in honor of the Pennsylvania Mother's March of Dimes. Goodenough served as I chairman of the local Mother's March Dimes, held here last I January. Women's Store Here Being Renovated Moren's, East 2nd St., women's apparel store owned and operated by Mr. and Mrs. Sheffield S. Cook, is being renovated throughout the interior, including re-painting and new flooring. William O'Neil is the painting-contractor. Flooring was laid by Lambert's Floor Covering. Business has been going on as usual during the "face-lifting." The building is owned by Mrs. Laura Chastain. Skating At Othmer's Awaits Weather Othmer's pond here is ready for ice skating if the weatherman does his part. A borough street department crew, directed by Oliver Watson, street commissioner, removed snow from the Park Ave. body of water Tuesday. Ice on the pond was about eight inches thick, Mr. Watson reported. Tentative plans call for the pond to be open for skating nightly from 6:00 to 9:00, under supervision. The pond also will be open Saturday afternoons. Donald F. Othmer, owner of the property, okayed use of the pond by local skaters in a letter to borough officials. Mr. Watson said skating would begin as soon as the weather turned colder.

Roulette Girl, 17, Killed Instantly In Auto Crash
23-Year-Old Ex-Soldier Driver Suffered Serious Head Injury;
Hospitalized in Olean General;
Condition "Not So Good"
Funeral services were held yesterday afternoon for 17-year-old Miss Pauline L. Roberts, of Roulette, victim of an auto accident late Saturday night near Olean, N. Y.
A passenger in a car driven by Clair V. Boyer, 22, also of Roulette, Miss Roberts died almost instantly after the car skidded into a tree.
The driver is in Olean General Hospital with a serious head injury. His mother said yesterday afternoon that his condition was "not good."
Accident Near Olean Limit
The accident occurred one-half mile east of the Olean city limit on Route 17. New York State police said the car, westbound, skidded on a curve near King's greenhouse. The auto was nearly torn in two when it wrapped itself around the tree.
Brought here this week by Haskins Motors, the smashed auto was seen by many. "How anybody ever survived that one I'll never know" was one comment that seemed to sum up the general thinking of persons who saw the car. Ed.j
The driver and Miss Roberts were taken to the hospital in Westons Mills Volunteer Fire Department's ambulance. Miss Roberts was dead upon arrival at the hospital at 10:30 o'clook.. Mr. Boyer was unconscious.
Dr. William E. MacDuffie, Cattaraugus County (N. Y.) coroner, who investigated the accident with Corp. J. C. Murphy, attached to the Allegany barracks of the New York State police, issued a certificate of accidental death for Miss Roberts. Death was attributed to a broken neck and crushed chest.
Mr. Boyer, a former serviceman with four years in the U.S. Air Force, and the girl were en route to a dance at Olean, it was learned. They had left from Roulette earlier in the evening.
The 1954 model car belonged to the driver's brother, David, a member of the USAF and stationed at Sampson, N. Y., according to another brother, Harold, who came here from his home in New Albany, Ind., after learning of the accident.
Discharged from service on March 25, 1955, Mr. Boyer worked in a Buffalo, N. Y. automobile plant until the holidays, his brother, Harold, said. He had not worked since Christmas.
Miss Roberts, a junior in Port Allegany Joint School, was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Roland Roberts. She was born at Coudersport, R. D. (Hebron Center) on June 29, 1938. She was a member of the Methodist Church.
Surviving besides her parents are
five brothers, - Darwin W. Roberts,
- Marvin Roberts,
- William Roberts and,
- Joseph Roberts, all at home;
- Lawrence Roberts, Roulette, and
two sisters, - Mrs. Geraldine Norton, Biloxi, Miss, and
- Mrs. Arlene Stewart, of Roulette.
Pallbearers at her service, conducted by the Rev. Robert Grossman, pastor of the Roulette Baptist Church, were

- William Grandin, - Robert Vanocker,
- Richard Phillips & - Donnie Bernard.
A prayer service was held at the Grabe Funeral Home at 2:00 o'clock. Burial was in Rathbone Cemetery, Coneville.

School Head Sees Growth In Enrollment Figures Enrollment in Coudersport Joint School five years hence is expected to top 1,300 students, Arlton Grover, supervising principal, told the Rotary Club Monday noon. The present enrollment is 1,073, the educator said. Hie plight of the local school reflects a national picture of too many students for existing facilities and too few teachers, Mr. Grover pointed out. The bulk of the projected increase here will occur at the junior and senior high school levels, he said. He cited a need for at least 15 additional teachers within the next five-year period. The local system is short four teachers at present, the supervising principal asserted. Mr. Grover called for the cooperation of the community with members of the school board in the interest of a better school system. He singled out H. B. Von Nieda, past president of the jointure, for special praise. Rotary heard a letter of thanks from Mrs. Willard Hauber, school nurse, for the club's financial backing of a holiday welfare program. Vice president Henry E. Martinson conducted the meeting.

Annual Dinner Saturday Night Melvin Blair, of Erie, area representative of the Pennsylvania Department of Commerce, will be the principal speaker at the annual diimer of the Roulette Chamber of Commerce, Saturday night in the fire hall. Possibility that J. C. Millin, representative of the area development division of West Penn Power Co., also would be a speaker was voiced by Jack Close, former secretary of the Roulette C. of C. Mr. Close will give a report 'On the organization's achievements during the past year at the dinner. The affair is scheduled to get underway at 6:30 o'clock. Tickets are $1.50 per plate.
Seven In Car, None Hurt Ih Accident A sedan driven by Miss Shirley Treat, 19, R. D. 2, Coudersport, climbed a bank, rolled over and skidded down the road, some ten miles north of Galeton at 6:30 Tuesday morning. State police making the investigation stated the group was en route to work in the plant of the Galeton Production Co. when the mishap occurred, and reported the car as a "complete loss." It is evident that the passengers were packed in the vehicle so closely they could not be tossed about, and fortunately no one was injured. Troopers stated that Miss Treat will be charged with reckless driving before Justice Herbert Watson. They stated further that this is the second accident for Miss Treat in a few months with the vehicle listed in the complete loss class.
First Time Together With Sons For Holidays The family of Mr. and Mrs. John Milchuck of this place spent a very j
hanov holiday season together. For some years they have been scattered with their sons in military service and getting furloughs at different times. A le Stephen J. Milchuck, who has served four years, now stationed at Orlando, Fla., was home. Cpl. Donald F. Milchuck, serving in the Marine Corps now at Parris Island, Cpl. Joseph B. Milchuck, who has been discharged, were home. Stephen and Donald are leaving this week for their bases. Invited Guest At Executive Mansion Mrs. Dennis Qoodenough Jr., is in receipt an invitation from Pennsylvania's first lady, Mrs. George Leader, attend a tea from 3:00 to 5:00 Friday, Jan. 20, at the Executive Mansion, in honor of the Pennsylvania Mother's March of Dimes. Goodenough served as I chairman of the local Mother's March Dimes, held here last I January. Women's Store Here Being Renovated Moren's, East 2nd St., women's apparel store owned and operated by Mr. and Mrs. Sheffield S. Cook, is being renovated throughout the interior, including re-painting and new flooring. William O'Neil is the painting-contractor. Flooring was laid by Lambert's Floor Covering. Business has been going on as usual during the "face-lifting." The building is owned by Mrs. Laura Chastain. Skating At Othmer's Awaits Weather Othmer's pond here is ready for ice skating if the weatherman does his part. A borough street department crew, directed by Oliver Watson, street commissioner, removed snow from the Park Ave. body of water Tuesday. Ice on the pond was about eight inches thick, Mr. Watson reported. Tentative plans call for the pond to be open for skating nightly from 6:00 to 9:00, under supervision. The pond also will be open Saturday afternoons. Donald F. Othmer, owner of the property, okayed use of the pond by local skaters in a letter to borough officials. Mr. Watson said skating would begin as soon as the weather turned colder.
