- Journey to America
Martin (Hans Martin) Wetzel came to America, arriving in Philadelphia, on Sept. 21, 1731, aboard the "Britannia" with his wife and 3 children. There were 264 Germans in the group, acccording to Toothman's document, "The Wetzels and Bonnets." The group was part of the Palatine Project, which relocated Germans and other Europeans. Hans Martin Wetzel is recorded as having married Maria Barbara Geist, daughter of Hans Nicklaus Geist, of Gerstorff, in Anne Kunseman Burgert's "18th Century Immigrants from the Northern Alsace," (name 552, p. 539.) More children were born to Martin Wetzel and Maria Barbara Geist, including John Wetzel, whose sons were Indian fighters. Zane Gray wrote about John Wetzel's son, Lewis Wetzel, in his books.

THE EARLY WETZELS OF AMERICA
The Morning Call in Allentown, PA 2 Sep 1912 pg 9, Mon

The “Early Wetzels” the “The First Wetzels” or the “Pioneer Wetzels” of America, by whichever name you want to call them, according to tradition and the early records of the family, came from the “Palatinate” in Germany, and therefore were “German Palatinates” and spoke the German language, a language different from that spoken in the high countries of Germany.
The Wetzels who came to America, like all other families, have probably descended from one common ancestor. How the surname Wetzel originated is a question which I am unable to answer.
The first Wetzel who came to America was Hans Martin Wetzel. He came over in the ship “Brittania” and qualified by taking the oath of allegiance at Philadelphia, September 21, 1731. His age at that time was 31 years. His wife who came with him, Maria Barbara was 33 years old. On the same ship were the following children: Hans Martin Wetzel, Jr., aged six years; Nicholas Wetzel, aged four years, and Catharine Wetzel, aged three years. Those three children were probably those of Hans Martin and Maria Barbara Wetzel. This is taken from the Pennsylvania Ar-chives, pages 29, 34, and 35. Hans Martin Wetzel settled in that territory now embraced in Lehigh county. It is near the present line of Berks and Lehigh counties. The old Wetzel homestead, located near St. Peter’s Church, in Upper Milford townships was in all probability built by him. It was built in 1740, and was built of logs, and was occupied until the year 1900.
The second Wetzel who came to America was John Jacob, who with his wife Barbar came in the ship “Charming Polly,” Captain of the ship was Charles Steadman, of London. He qualified, October 8, 1737, and located in Here-ford township, Berks County, only several miles distant where his brother Hans Martin had settled. The third Wetzel who emigrated to America was Phillip Wetzel. He came in the ship “Davy.” of which William Patton was the com-mander. He qualified on October 25, 1738. If he was married or where he settled I can not say as I have found no further records about him. That a kinship existed between these three Wetzels can not be doubted, and it is very probable that they were three brothers, found among the emigrant ancestors of so many American families.
Other Wetzel’s who emigrated to America are as follows: John Werner Wetzel, who came in the ship “Queen Eliza-beth,” Captain Alexander Hope, he qualified September 16, 1738; Jacob Wetzel, who came in the ship “Ann Gally,” Captain William Wilson. He qualified September 16, 1738, which was in the same year in which the Rev. Michael Schlatter, the Reformed Missionary came to America. He settled in Lower Milford. A warrant was issued to the said Jacob Wetzel on July 1, 1734, for a tract of land of 160 acres in 1754 for another tract of 51 acres and 39 perches. On the first tract of proprietary patent was granted on September 10, 1747, and on the other on Aug 9, 1754 both to Jacob Wetzel. On April 4, 1771, a third patent was granted to said Jacob Wetzel for a tract of 47 acres called “Mount Faith.” The first two tracts he sold to his son, Peter, in 1765. It is now in possession of the Eberhard’s. Another Wet-zel, Conrad Wetzel. It is not known when he came to America, but he settled near the Moravian town of Emaus. He had two warrants of land issued to him, the first dated, February 25, 1734, for 145 acres and 53 perches to the said Conrad Wetzel, Esq. He was for a number of years a Justice of the Peace, but as he did not comply with the condi-tions of the warrant said warrant was transferred to Peter Moyer, January 10, 1749, and was patented to Christian Miller, of Long Swamp, December 14, 1762. A second patent was granted in 1748 for 164 acres, sold in 1753 to George Stahlnecker, patent granted, February 20, 1754. This tract is situated in Lower Milford.
Hans George Wetzel came over in the ship “Bennet Gally”, John Waltham, master. He qualified August 13, 1750. Christopher Wetzel emigrated in the ship “Nancy”. Thomas Canton, master, August 31, 1750. George Wetzel came in the ship, “Anderson,” Hugh Campbell, captain, September 27, 1752. John Jacob, came in the ship “Phoenix”, John Spurrier, commander, Nov. 2, 1752. Johannes on the ship, “Richard and Mary” John Moore, master, on Sep-tember 30, 1754. He came from Wuertenberg. John George, came in the ship “Sarah”, Francis Stansfield, captain, on September 20, 1764. The last who emigrated was John George, of the same name as the one before him, in the ship “Hero” on Oct. 27, 1764.
According to the foregoing there came over to America five John Wetzels. Of these one settled in West Virginia in the “Pan Handle.” Looking on the map you will see one of the counties named Wetzel county which was so named in honor of the Wetzels of that place. He had five sons and two daughters. The sons were Martin, Louis, (who was known as the great Indian fighter), Jacob, John, and Geo. and the daughters were Susan and Christianna. The father, John Wetzel, was murdered by the Indians and Louis being of retaliating nature, determined on avenging the death of his father, and many were the Indians that went down at the crack of his rifle. He is mentioned in the book written on the life of “Daniel Boone.” It is said that he was fleet-footed and could run as fast as a deer.
A second of these Wetzels settled in Packer township, Carbon County. He had four sons, John, Valentine, David, and Daniel, and four daughters, The daughters were married to Stephen Keber, James Troy, Lewis Hettinger and Phillip Hinkle. A saw mill was built many years ago on the property on one of the streams, a tributary of Quakake creek. The third of these John Wetzels settled near Macungie, in Lower Macungie township. He in all probability owned a farm a short distance above the borough of Macungie. This is the John Wetzel in all probability that gave the two acres of his land for a school building and purposes. This is the property on which is located the East Macungie school building, located only a short distance from where we are meeting today. Where the other two John Wetzels are I have not so far found out, neither the dates nor the places of their settling.
The pioneer Wetzels all belonged to the Reformed Church, according to the records obtainable, excepting Conrad Wetzel, and a few others, who were Lutherans. They all took an active part in church work. We find them in the rec-ords of the “Great Swamp” church before 1740, in the records kept by Rev. Goethie. We also find them in the early records of Jerusalem’s church of WEtster Salisbury also the Zionville, Lehigh, Ziegel and other churches. We find their names in the records as members, of officers of the consistories, etc.
The early or pioneer Wetzels also took an interest in education, as already stated, by the donation made by John Wetzel and his wife, Jane Wetzel. One Wetzel said, “When I leave I cannot leave to my sons a fair fortune but I can try to leave them a fair education.” The same old gentleman said further, (he was living after the organization of free schools) “If there is one tax that I prefer to pay above all other, it is the school tax, because that tax is used in edu-cating the rising generation.” In conclusion I will say, we like to read the life of Daniel Boone, the life of Patrick Henry, and of others. Why not just as well try and find out the life’s record of our early ancestors, who were just as much of our nation builders as the men whose names I have just stated, because they had to go through the same hardships as those men? From these ten or a dozen ancestors who came to America sprang all the Wetzels that we find in America to-day. We find them in nearly every county of our commonwealth and in nearly every state in the Union. We find them in all professions and trades, ministers of the Gospel, lawyers, teachers, carpenters, masons, etc.
Let us try and find our ancestors, because that is a duty which I think we should try to perform. The celebrated Dr. Henry Harbaugh said, “He who does not care to know his ancestors, cares very little for things higher.”
