BRIDGE DEDICATION SET TO HONOR OUR COUSIN, PHILIP PALMATIER
“COUDERSPORT - A dedication will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday Aug 18, 2018 to rename a bridge over the Allegheny River in honor of Commander Philip Frank “Jet” Palmatier.
The bridge carrying Avenue A in Coudersport’s Rubbertown neighborhood over the Allegheny River lies close to the childhood home of Palmatier, who was born in 1950 to Alfreda and the late Philip Palmaiter Sr.
On Dec., 10, 1990, Palmatier was flying a TA-4 Skyhawk as part of a routine training mission about 85 miles northwest of Key West, Fla., when his plane collided with another TA-4. Both planes had launched from the aircraft carrier USS Lexington. Palmatier was serving as commanding officer of a training squadron from the Chase Field Naval Air Station in Texas at the time of the crash.
Palmatier graduated with honors from Coudersport High School in 1968. He graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy in 1972, and later graduated with distinction from the Naval War College in Newport, RI just a few months before his death.
A memorial marker and flagpole in honor of Palmatier can be found near the entrance of Woodland Cemetery in Hebron Township, Potter County. The flagpole has a replica of his fighter jet on top.
Earlier this year, the state legislature approved a bill to honor Palmatier and a number of other fallen veterans with bridge dedications.
The ceremony in Potter County has been organized by members of American Legion Post 192 in Coudersport, which will include singing of the National Anthem and patriotic music by a barbershop quartet, a KIA (Killed-in-Action) memorial tribute by members of the Vietnam Vets/Legacy Vets Motorcycle Club, a performance of the Navy Hymn, military honors, a rifle Salute, and the playing of “Taps.”
The invocation and closing prayer will be offered by Chaplain John Kallerson, Colonel, United States Army, retired. The keynote speaker for the events is Palmatier’s younger brother Chris, who is also a Navy Veteran, and remarks will be made by other members of the Palmatier family.
Family members planning to attend the ceremony included Palmatier’s widow, Beryle Tate Palmatier, and his mother, Alfreda. His father was a Korean War veteran who served 33 years in the U.S. Navy before retiring at the rank of captain. Palmatier Sr. passed away on Christmas Eve of 2007. While “Jet” was an active-duty pilot, his brother, Chris, served as a Naval air traffic controller.
Remarks are also expected to be made by state Sen. Joe Scarnati, R-Brockway, and state Rep. Martin Causer, R-Turltepoint, who sponsored the initial legislation for the bridge dedication.
“These men gave their lives for us and for our country, and they should be honored and remembered each and every day,” Causer stated. “Naming these bridges in their memory will serve as a reminder to all of us of their sacrifice.”
The bridge renaming is a continuation of the efforts to memorialize Potter County citizens killed while serving their country, with all the county’s Vietnam War Veterans now honored in a similar manner. Causer has worked with other state legislators to officially recognize the named bridges through proclamations, which will be done in this case, as well.”
Philip’s widow is Beryle Tate, a 1969 Coudersport High School graduate. They have three sons: Jacob, Jason and Joshua.
Phillip Frank Palmatier Jr. is the son of the Phillip Frank Palmatier Sr. and Alfreda June Osborne, grandson of Sophia Emily Mosch and Harry Caleb Palmatier I, great grandson of Emil Ernest Mosch and Wilhelmina Hedwig Kortz, 2nd great grandson of Karl Herman Mosch and Caroline Scheider, Jacob Kortz and Katherine Pflugfelder.
