The 1850 Virginia lists Peter Wetzel (Whetsel) as a 41 year old shoemaker. living in Wythe County. Other members listed in the household are Matilda-33, Mary-13, William-9, Ann-7, John-5 and Harry-3.
In records from "Wythe County's Lost Children" on March 31, 1840 Peter Wetzel is listed as a teacher. It appears as though he taught from 1839-1844. In 1835 there was some trouble with a split in the Lutheran Church. Peter Wetzel and his brothers Jesse and George were in the middle of it.
In Jefferson Wetzel's, "History of the Wetzel Family" he describes the split in the church and the day it came to blows. Jefferson tells about his father George being hit with a cane and Peter Wetzel coming to the rescue. "Uncle Peter Wetzel, who was a powerful man, physically, knocked out his adversaries in first round, quick succession, without receiving a scratch.".

IVYPEERY Hello, I find this new information on Matilda Davis and Peter Wetzel, Jr., extremely valuable. I have been searching for data on each of them for years and years. We have also been trying to find out more about Peter Wetzel Jr.
father, who was Peter Wetzel, Sr., who married Pauff woman. There certainly is much information to put together to find the lineage and be correct. Thanks for sharing.

IVYPEERY My Matilda Davis, being married to Peter Wetzel, Jr., about 1836 did have a daughter, Mary E Whetzel, (she changed the spelling of her maiden name) She bon 1837 or 1838, and married on 1 Feb. 1865 to Thomas J.Peery, my great grandfather, and my continued line. My problem is her mother's first name I do believe was also Matilda, and the names shows on 1950 Census, I think, if the mother of my Matilda who was bornn in 1836, she is not shown on this 12950 census. Can anyone tell me if they have records of parents and siblings of Matilda Davis,the mother. I also can not find burial for Matilda Davis Wetzel.
Needs some help here.
