Whetsell, aged sixty years, whose death occurred Wednesday morning at his home at 44 Hart Avenue, will be conducted today at the old home in Blount County. The remains will be taken to Maryville this morning, and thence to the old home. Maryville Enterprise, 26 February 1914, p.5: John R. Whetsell, youngest brother of I.H. and M.F. Whetsell of Maryville died at his home in Knoxville last Wednesday. The body was brought to Maryville Friday for interment. Mr. Whetsell has been ill for some time and the end was not unexpected. He was born June the 8, 1811 thus being over 85 years of age. He was born in Withe (sic) county, Va., had been married twice and was the father of 10 children. He had 46 grand children and 12 great grand children. His second wife, whose maiden name was Sarah E. Renfro, survives him. He joined the Luthern church in young manhood and has been a member all his life. The remains were interred at the Luthern church on the Cade's Cove road Monday. Prof. S.T.
