Many children, my father included, grandchildren and, perhaps, if curiosity has been passed along, great grandchildren, of Joseph and Elizabeth Lavey Herbstrit, have wondered what happened to the first son of Joseph & Elizabeth Herbstritt.
Eugene Herbstritt was born 27 March 1910 Benzinger Township, Elk County, PA.
Before Joseph and Betty moved the family to Sweden Township, Potter County, PA, in 1929, Eugene left St Marys, PA to pursue a boxing career in Cleveland, Ohio. This, at least, was the Herbstritt family lore. Eugene was never seen nor heard from again by any of the family. Conjecture reigned among the brothers and sisters of Eugene. One thought was, that the boxing world had entangled Eugene in the world of mobsters and racketeers and that his lack of any kind of communication with his family, most likely meant Eugene had met his demise in some backstreet alley.
A boxing career may have, indeed, been Eugene's intention but the 1940 United States Federal Census record for Cleveland, Ohio, shows that Eugene was living in Cleveland, and was the the head of the household with
- his wife, Frances,
- son, Robert and
- daughter, Dorothea.
Boxing was not listed as Eugene's profession.
Porter in a hotel was listed on the census record for Eugene's occupation, with a yearly income of $832. Eugune may have been boxing, but not for any reported income.
A few years later Eugene remarried; the reason for his first marriage ending is unknown. He had married a woman named Mildred Hance and they were living in St Louis, Missouri.
Eugene passed away at the age of 85 in St Louis on January 7, 1996.

It has never felt like a close knit family to me, so I'm not surprised. I definitely have 1st cousins, probably around Cleveland, OH and St Louis, MO.
