Here's a question for the old timers. I'm guessing this photo is from about 1947- 53. That's my dad Robert on the chord organ, grandmother Mabel at the piano and Frankie Slamecka on drums. Can anyone supply a name for the sax player? My mom thought his last name was Hosley. Don't know if that is correct. When I was very young, Dad told a story about their sax player dying in a cabin fire. Apparently the fire started when he dropped a glass jug of gasoline. Dad pointed out the site where the cabin used to be, down over the bank in the woods, on the way to Denton Hill. The chimney may still have been standing then.
I had the impression that it was my grandad's (John) cabin but again, I'm not sure. I was about 5 or 6 when I first heard the story.

Dale Ulkins What an incredible photo. I had no idea Frank Slameca was a drummer. The fire sounds like the fire that also involved teacher Jim Berger. If so I'll dig out the old scrapbooks and try to photograph the story. I remember it being in one of them.

Thomas Maynard The burned cabin sounds like Old Bill Fish's "Golly's Folly" located in the place you describe, the Nine mine creek. A Kelsey boy died in that fire. One of the survivors, still living is Jim Berger..

Dale Angood I appreciate the help. I already know more than I did. I remember Bill Fish as one of Grandad's friends so that part makes sense. I remember us visiting Frank when I was young. They lived in one of the last houses up on the bank before Rubbertown.

Susan Busch Holmberg
Susan Busch Holmberg There was a fire in a cabin that some young men died. Jim Burger who ended up being a history teacher at CHS. Jim was one of the men in the fire, but he lived but was very badly burned. Yes one of the boys did drop a glass gallon of gasline in front of a fire place and that's what started the fire.

With Other Finalists In Harrisburg
Local Teacher Honored
By Jill Fish
Donald E. Kelsey of Coudersport was one of nine finalists in the state's Teacher of the Year competition who were honored in mid-April at ceremonies in Harrisburg.
Mr. Kelsey and his wife Peggy met the other candidates for the award at a luncheon in the Host Inn on April 17, at which Dr. Donald Carroll, assistant secretary of education, spoke. Miss Rosemary Palaferro, an elementary teacher in Reading, was named statewide winner.
Each finalist received a trophy, a gold apple on top of a wooden block. Gov. Milton Shapp had a token for each finalist at the luncheon, the Pennsylvania and National flags, and each woman, whether finalist or spouse, received a bouquet of flowers.
They met John C. Pittenger, secretary of education, briefly and received the congratulations of Gov. Shapp. Their day included a tour of the education building and a visit to the governor's office. The finalists were chosen from a field of 85 nominees for the honor this year. Mr. Kelsey is also listed in Outstanding Elementary School Teachers of America, a standard reference work.
Came Here In 1949
He came to Coudersport with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Wayne Kelsey, following his graduation from Mentor, Ohio, high school in 1949. After receiving his bachelor's degree at Mansfield in 1953 he was drafted into the army and became an instructor at Aberdeen Proving Grounds in Maryland.
He taught five years in the Penn Delco School District, Delaware County, following his release from the army, then joined the staff at Port Allegany Union School District where he taught secondary special education classes for six years.
He returned to Coudersport in 1967 where he taught intermediate special education classes until last year. He is now coordinator of the reading program grades K through 12, became director of the Right to Read program when Coudersport was chosen as a model site school, is working with the newly-instituted Volunteer Aide Program and is developing a peer-tutoring program for primary and intermediate students.
Mr. Kelsey has taught three six-week summer remedial reading school programs in the elementary school here, worked
Teacher Meets Governor
Donald Kelsey of Coudersport, one of nine finalists chosen for the state's Teacher of the Year Award, spoke briefly with Gov. Milton Shapp during a day In the state capltol honoring the outstanding teachers in mid-April. Mr. Kelsey has taught for 21 years, the past seven of them in Coudersport, working mostly with exceptional children and disadvantaged youths and adults.
with student teachers as a Mansfield State College cooperating teacher three years, spent three summers assisting with teacher-trainee workshops and teaching undergraduate courses at Mansfield, and was chosen the 1970 Pennsylvania representative to the Adult Basic Education Teacher-Trainer Reading Workshop at Moorehead State University in Kentucky.
For the past six years, he has been actively involved in working with area adults, teaching the adult basic education courses which lead to General Education Development certificates, the equivalent of a high school diploma.
Philosophy of Teaching
His philosophy of teaching has changed and developed through the years, Mr. Kelsey says. "Since many years of my experience in education have been shared with exceptional children and disadvantaged youths and adults, my viewpoints on the commitments of our profession have been tempered by the knowledge and insight gained from them."
A teacher's ability to assess the student's strengths and weaknesses in the areas in which the teacher is structuring the learning environment is important to him.
"A teacher must encourage each student to develop his
strengths to a level of performance where pride in his accomplishments is valued by himself."
However, "Developing students' abilities in the cognitive areas should not overshadow the emotional and physical domain. We should strive for the total development of the student."
The development of self-discipline in students is important, too. "The child must be encouraged to learn respect for his fellow men and those in authority," and this can be done in the classroom, toward the ultimate goal of "success in family, school, social and community settings."
His philosophy also stresses individual instruction and parental involvement.
Mr. Kelsey is considered an expert at diagnostic and prescriptive teaching by John B. Hillenbrand, superintendent of schools in Coudersport.
Diagnostic Ability
"He is able to diagnose a child's learning problem and is familiar with appropriate materials that can be brought to bear on a continuous progress basis."
He also commented on Mr. Kelsey's "warm, friendly and cheerful manner, a tremendous asset in communicating subject matter effectively to children.
"Children see in him a dedicated gentle man who is genuinely interested in helping each of them to be happy ana successful in their learning and social experiences. He is very sensitive and responsive to the needs of children in . a wholesome and constructive manner."
Mr. Kelsey, who has four children of his own, earned his master's degree in education at Temple University and is now working toward his doctorate.
