Though the events described in these pages tell of an entire Union Army regiment, our Ezra Lewis Fuller was in the very heart of those events and so one may safely assume the stories are Ezra's story as well. Ezra enlisted in Company D, 53rd Regiment, Pennsylvania Volunteers in April 4,1864 the same day as his brother-in-law James Cotton. James was the brother of Ezra's wife, Electa Jane Cotton. Ezra enlisted in Company D, 53rd Regiment, Pennsylvania Volunteers in April 4,1864 the same day as his brother-in-law James Cotton. James was the brother of Ezra's wife, Electa Jane Cotton. James and Ezra were in the Battle of Cold Harbor. James shot in the jaw and later died in a hospital in Philadelphia. When one reads the gravestone of Ezra Lewis Fuller, which reads, “E. L. FULLER 1842 - 1884 Co. D. 53 PA. INF. ELECTA J. HIS WIFE - 1834 -1918”, it's easy to see the words and dates and not think beyond that limited information. These pages derived from the memoirs of the officers of the 53rd Regiment PA Volunteers, give, often in great and gruesome detail, the daily life experiences of Ezra Lewis Fuller between August 1864 and May 24, 1865 when he mustered out of the Union Army. All Davey, Freeman, Hart, Fuller descendants in this Family Tree Group are direct descendants of Ezra Lewis Fuller & Electa Jane Cotton.
