Ruth Deitrick, Bessie and Anna Belle's father was Frank L Blow. He would have been born around 1860 or so. He had a son Frank E. Blow born in 1893. This picture is probably Frank E.

Births here seem to be more like 1910-1912- e.g. Paul Toombs and Weldon Welfling, resp. Another generation yet? I estimate the photo, CHS track&field or cross country team? 1928.

1929 - WELDON WOODROW WELFING
Weldon Woodrow Welfling (1912-1978) is the son of Potter Co. School Superintendent, Rudolph O Welfing (1877-1918) and school teacher, Potter County Historical co-founder, Mary E Erway (1880-1974). After high school, Weldon went on to be a medical doctor in Shaker Heights, Ohio.
Doug Vaughan, knowing that your dad’s family resided in Sweden Valley, Coudersport, do you have any knowledge of the Francis Vaughn (different spelling), 2nd from left in the front row?

Doug Vaughan
Paul, I don't have photos at hand to compare but it's possible that's my great-uncle Francis, surname misspelled in caption; any family resemblance is remote, however. ("Our" Francis looked more like the taller guy kneeling in the front row, middle: can you check that typed caption?) Chronology is off, too: My grandfather Sewell Vaughan moved his own family from my great-grandfather's farm on Sweden Hill to Sweden Valley in mid-1930s, when my dad was 6-8, to take a job working on the roads for the county during the Depression. But a couple years later they moved to Genessee. By the time of this photo, 1923, Sewell's youngest brother, Francis Lyle Vaughan, born 1911 in KY, would have been 12; he may have attended school in Coudersport but this "Francis Vaughn" looks older. Ours moved from the farm, too, in late 1930s, joined the Army, served in Washington, DC, area assigned to the Pentagon/War Dept, rose to colonel, retired in the late 50s, moved to AZ, died heirless in Fairfax, VA in mid-60s. I'll get biographical details and get back to you.

Doug Vaughan, my error. Francis is the tall guy, center front.
I would say that these guys are closer to 16-18 years old and that would put this photo at circa 1929. This is a Potter Co. Historical Society photo.

I find it fascinating to see old pictures and knowing what happens with/to/by them later in life.... and vice versa. George Brehmer, standing next to Weldon, perpetrated a murder-suicide in 1937 in downtown Coudersport, a love triangle that involved the brother John William Scott of my neighbor on Center Park St, Ken Scott, from Hebron. Tragic.

Brenda Kenealy Williams I had the relationships in my Tree but I hadn't worked it out, your relationship to Ken et al. I was shocked when I started researching the neighborhood and found out that Ken and Clara Drabert Scott came from old Hebron families. It had never occurred to me as a kid that they came from ... anywhere, and that they had histories and... I spent a lot of time with ken back in the day.

Here's a question for the old timers. I'm guessing this photo is from about 1947- 53. That's my dad Robert on the chord organ, grandmother Mabel at the piano and Frankie Slamecka on drums. Can anyone supply a name for the sax player? My mom thought his last name was Hosley. Don't know if that is correct. When I was very young, Dad told a story about their sax player dying in a cabin fire. Apparently the fire started when he dropped a glass jug of gasoline. Dad pointed out the site where the cabin used to be, down over the bank in the woods, on the way to Denton Hill. The chimney may still have been standing then.
I had the impression that it was my grandad's (John) cabin but again, I'm not sure. I was about 5 or 6 when I first heard the story.

Dale Ulkins What an incredible photo. I had no idea Frank Slameca was a drummer. The fire sounds like the fire that also involved teacher Jim Berger. If so I'll dig out the old scrapbooks and try to photograph the story. I remember it being in one of them.

Dale Angood I appreciate the help. I already know more than I did. I remember Bill Fish as one of Grandad's friends so that part makes sense. I remember us visiting Frank when I was young. They lived in one of the last houses up on the bank before Rubbertown.

Susan Busch Holmberg
Susan Busch Holmberg There was a fire in a cabin that some young men died. Jim Burger who ended up being a history teacher at CHS. Jim was one of the men in the fire, but he lived but was very badly burned. Yes one of the boys did drop a glass gallon of gasline in front of a fire place and that's what started the fire.

Dale Ulkins It's a pretty grim story. I had no idea Charlie Fickinger was even there let alone responsible for saving Jim Berger's life!

Steven J Heimel Yes, the camp burned to the ground, two dead. Only the chimney was left. I remember going out there with Grandaddy, Dad and Uncle Bill to build a woodshed, pour a foundation and build a new camp on the site.
