Hi Sue. Whoah! That is a lot!
I'm writing to let you know that I've at least read your note and find it very interesting.
I'll poke around a little to see if I can make any of these connections.
Ciao,
john

Hello John - This is your cousin Sue Abrahamsen here. I don't know if you recall, but we corresponded about a year ago regarding a possible McCoy family connection, but were unable to find one at that time. I just wanted to follow-up with a wealth of new information I've found about my family.
After a much sort-after breakthrough with my DeForest family - Mary Deforest b. 1810 in Queens, NY (married to Thomas McCoy) was my 2x great grandmother - I've added many new branches onto to my tree, and in researching them, DNA cousin Mary Ellen Wetzel has once again popped into the picture. The following are some of the names we now have in common and I'm hoping you, the genealogical detective that you are, might be able to help me connect the dots....
On your tree you have a Sarah Doughty b.1768 married to Isaac Hicks. Well, it turns out Sarah Doughty was the sister of my ancestor, Mary Doughty b. about 1750 who was married to Theodorus DeForest. (Mary and Theodorus were the grandparents of my 2x great grandmother, Mary Deforest.) You have the parents of Sarah Doughty as John Doughty and Abigail Sayers. I have Abigail's name spelled as Sayre, and I believe she is a descendant of the Sayre family who migrated from Massachusetts and settled the town of Southampton, LI, NY in the mid-1600's. (There's lots of existing documentation on both the Sayre and Doughty families.)
I suspect these two families might contain our common ancestors but I'm just not sure how and where we connect. I'm still missing a few links in my family line where no documentation seems to exist, but DNA has proved invaluable in helping me get this far.
I've also found we both share the name 'Elizabeth Hinchman' on our trees, but your Elizabeth was born in 1785 in W. Virginia married to Thomas Taylor, and my Elizabeth was born about 1666, probably in Queens, NY, and married to Elias Doughty b. 1664. Neither of us has more about her family, so don't know if that means something or nothing.
Also on your tree are two families I'm actively pursuing, the Mayo and Parshall families, and I'm wondering if you know whether either of those are connected in any way to each other, or to the Sayre or Doughty families, as they were all 'founding families' who lived in Massachusetts in the early 1600's.
And, of course, always the big question for me is...do you know if your McCoy family is in any way connected to any of the above.
Thanks for taking the time to sort through all this, John. As always, look forward to hearing your thoughts.
Cheers, Sue

Sue,
I work on this stuff almost all day, almost every day (I’m essentially retired). I’m obsessed (talk about ghosts!) We’ll find it eventually; I mean, the DNA doesn’t lie and it’s already pointing the way. Good luck. I’m sure our paths will cross again.
Have you tested with other DNA companies? It would expand your ‘hit base’.
Keeep in touch

Hi John - Thanks for getting back to me. Indications are from my many DNA cousins who have McCoys on their trees that our family sprang from the same McCoys who, after arriving in America sometime in the 1700's, traveled west and south. Ours, apparently, headed north. Hope in my lifetime to make SOME family connection because I fear I'll be one cranky ghost knocking things off shelves at the National Archives if I don't! Please keep me in mind if any more McCoy records should surface. Will let you know of any breakthroughs on my end, as well.
Cheers, Sue

I'm sorry, Sue. I've looked at your tree at our match and I do not see the connection. Distant cousins, I suspect it's quite a bit further back, which would mean that our paths eventually do cross and the Thomas McCoy does belong in our trees. I just don't have that level of detail yet. I do have two Thomas McCoys born 1795 & 1800, uncle/nephew to each other, both born to William McCoys, father-son, and both born in Virginia. I do not have either of them married yet, sorry. My McCoys are of the feuding families, also related to the Hatfield feudists- my grandmother was grand niece to both feuding elders, granddaughter to their sisters. Do you know if your Tom if of this family, eventually?
Sincerely,
john

Hello Cousin - My name is Sue Abrahamsen and I'm searching for information about my McCoy family. My 2x great grandfather was Thomas McCoy b. 1790 in NYC. I've been unable to connect him with any McCoy family and was wondering if you have some family history you could share with me. Any help you can send my way would be much appreciated. Look forward to hearing from you.
Cheers, Cousin Sue
