My main maternal lines are the ancestors, descendants and in-laws of: --Mahlon Mitchell Jr. (1806-1889) and Elizabeth Gilbert (1815-1877), my 2nd great grandparents. She is a 6th generation Mayflower descendant of Edward Fuller. This Mitchell family’s reunion started in 1923. (I am reunion president, because none of my cousins want the title.) The 2018 reunion is scheduled for July 21 at the Mitchell Pavilion at Coudersport Area Recreation Park. (The pavilion is named after an unrelated Mitchell. For many years the group met at Mitchell Park, also named after an unrelated Mitchell.) Their son George Washington Mitchell (1844-1915) is my great grandfather. --Charles L. Vergason (1833-1924) and his second wife Cynthia Maria Strong (1835-1915), my 2nd great grandparents. Their daughter Lydia Eliza is third wife of George Washington Mitchell and my great grandmother. Today’s Mitchell reunion was originally the Mitchell-Vergason Reunion in 1923, and Charles attended. All branches of the family are welcome at our reunions. --Charles W. Thompson (1868-1939) and Ada Dell Toles (1873-1963), my great grandparents. There are at least two different and apparently unrelated Toles lines in Potter Co. Both are in my tree. My main paternal line is the Hamilton line, which came to Potter Co. from Monongalia Co., WV. My father was Jake Hamilton (1918-1954). Two of his brothers also settled in Potter Co. -- Harry Kimble “Johnny” Hamilton (1914-1967) and -- Marshall Hamilton (1924-1991). The three brothers had 12 children in Potter Co., and most of them settled in the Coudersport area. Two of my first cousins are - Larry Kimble Hamilton (1944-1994) and - Thomas Howard Hamilton (1947-2006). My all-male Hamilton line descends from Henry Hamilton (1742-1828), who came to Monongalia Co., from Northern Ireland. My Hamiltons also descend from the large Tennant and Haught families of Monongalia Co. in the 1700s. My mother was Luella Mae Mitchell (1917-2010). Mom and Dad owned the Coudersport Service Station business (known as the Corner Store at the corner of Main and Chestnut) from about July 1950 to about June 1952. I have a few memories. Mom was a cashier at the Coudersport elementary school cafeteria for many years. Other Potter Co. surnames in the tree include: Ayers, Baker, Bennett, Clark, Clinton, Cornelius, Dingman, Foster, Gilbert, Hackett, Haskins, Hauber, King, Knowlton, Lattin, Matteson, Russell, Snyder, Tauscher (Teuscher), Toombs. Washington Clinton's daughter Katherine (1857-) married Orange Haskins. His son Howard Henry Haskins married Loretta M. Willett. Their daughter Kathleen June Haskins married Marshall Hamilton, who was my uncle. Marshall and June had four children. One still lives in Coudersport. Three of their children have died: Thomas Howard, Susan Dawn and Jackie "Jack" Marshall. (June and Marshall were World War II veterans. Said it before but I can not get over the number of people who were in WWII from Coudy. Most people know of their Dad or Mom serving but I was oblivious to all the greatest generation.   20220713GHLn- Hamilton brothers settle in Coudersport, PA Posted 07 Dec 2020 by hamilton1948 Delbert B. Hamilton was most likely the first Hamilton brother to move to Coudersport, Potter Co., PA. In 1935, Delbert Hamilton, age 33, was living in Coudersport with his wife Hattie Gail, 32, and two sons Delbert E., 4, and Johnny R., 8/12 (1 Apr 1940 US Census). Luella Mae Mitchell Hamilton, my mother, once said she thought Delbert moved to Coudersport to work for a gas company. Delbert did not stay in Coudersport. In 1940, he was living with his family in Apollo, Armstrong Co., PA, and he was working as a laborer for a gas company (1940 US Census). Three of his younger brothers did settle in Coudersport. Jake Hamilton, my father, was probably next; he moved to Coudersport about 1936 probably looking for work (Luella Mae Mitchell Hamilton). From 1936 to 1939, he was working as a truck driver hauling pipe for New York State Natural Gas Co., according to his US Marine Corps personnel file. The personnel documents also show that Jake went to work in 1939 for Abbotts Dairys, Coudersport. Jake participated in the youth group at the Free Methodist Church on North Main Street, Coudersport, and perhaps he also attended services. Church members included the families of Walter Lattin Sr. and Irene Marvin Lattin, who lived on North Main St., and Carl and Ettabell Thompson Mitchell, who lived on Ross Glen Road. The children of the two families also participated in the youth group. Jake married Dorothy May "Dot" Lattin on 30 Nov 1938. He was about 19 and she was about 16. Dorothy was the daughter of Walter and Irene. Jake and Dorothy had one daughter born in 1941. Dorothy died 6 Apr 1943. Harry Kimble "Johnny" Hamilton followed Jake to Coudersport. In 1929, he married Nellie Hazel Kennedy in West Virginia. Kimble was 18, Hazel was 14 (WV Marriages Index and 1 Apr 1930 US Census). In 1930, the couple had a 6-month-old daughter Madalin, and the family was living in the home of Hazel's parents (1930 US Census). In 1935, Harry K. Hamilton was living in rural Monongalia County, WV (1940 US Census). In 1937, Kimble and Hazel had a stillborn child Harry Stanley Hamilton. In 1939, Harry K. "Johnny" Hamilton was working on the farm owned by Leigh N. and Mildred V. Cheverton Neefe on Sweden Hill, near Coudersport. That could have been a part-time job. In 1940, Harry K. Hamilton, 28, was lodging in the home of Walter and Irene Lattin in Coudesport. He was working as a beater in a paper mill and he was still married (1940 US Census). He was divorced, very likely in the early 1940s and he began dating Luella Mae Mitchell. She was a daughter of Carl and Ettabell Mitchell. Later Harry K. dated Marjorie A. Jones, and they married 26 Dec 1942 (her obituary). They had five children. Sometime after Jake's wife died, Jake began dating Luella. Jake was drafted, and, on 1 Jun 1944, he enlisted in the US Marines for the "duration plus six months" at Buffalo, NY. Jake and Luella married 14 Oct 1944 in Jacksonville, NC. Luella was still there about a week later when Jake's unit marched out of Camp Lejeune. The Marines didn't know it at the time, but they were on their way to the Battle of Iwo Jima. Luella returned to her war job in Emporium, PA. Jake was wounded 25 Feb 1945 during the Battle of Iwo Jima. The wound was not serious -- he was out of action for 10 days and returned to the battle. After he was discharged on 22 Feb 1946, Jake returned to civilian life in Coudersport. Jake and Luella had two sons. After the war, Army combat veteran Marshall Hamilton followed his brothers to Coudersport. Luella said at first Marshall lived with Jake and Luella. On 25 Dec 1946, Marshall married war verteran Kathleen June Haskins (her obituary) in Olean, NY (affidavit with June's application for Pennsylvania veteran's benefits). Marshall and June had four children. June died 24 May 1972 at age 48 after a year-long illness. Marshall married Josephine D. Kennedy on 31 Jan 1973 in Virginia (his obituary). Jake died 6 Feb 1954 at age 35, and Luella died 7 Aug 2010 at 92. Harry K. died 6 Nov 1967 at 52, and Marjorie died 5 Mar 2007 at 85. Marshall died 13 Dec 1991 at 67. Most of the 14 children of the three brothers settled in the Coudersport area. Hazel remarried. She died 20 Nov 1998. Her daughter Madalin died in 1988. Washington Clinton's daughter Elizabeth "Lizzie" (1839-187) was the second wife of my great-grandfather George Washington Mitchell. She died after childbirth. I will see if I can enhance the photo and get a better view of the faces. Also there is a link to the Hamilton side of my family, if I have this right. Washington Clinton's daughter Katherine (1857-) married Orange Haskins. His son Howard Henry Haskins married Loretta M. Willett. Their daughter Kathleen June Haskins married Marshall Hamilton, who was my uncle. Marshall and June had four children. One still lives in Coudersport. Three of their children have died: Thomas Howard, Susan Dawn and Jackie "Jack" Marshall. (June and Marshall were World War II veterans. The 1940 US Census for Clay District, Monongalia Co., WV, has the following entry for the William and Lucy Hamilton household (enumerated 12 Apr 1940 as of Apr 1): Parks, Helen J., granddaughter, female, white, age 6, single, attended school since 1 Mar 1940, She was born in West Virginia and lived in the same house on 1 Apr 1935. So, who was Helen J. Parks? She does not appear in any other family records. If you have any information, please contact me. The census listing means that she was a granddaughter of William Hamilton. She could also have been a grandaughter of Lucy Tennant. If Helen was a granddaughter of both, who was the mother? With a given age of 6, she would have been born in 1934 or 1935. In those years Bettie was about age 5, Ruie was about 12 and Wilma was about 17. Wilma would have been old enough to give birth. Ruie might have been old enough. However, the granddaughter could have been using her mother's last name. In this case, most of the Hamilton boys, including C. Ward, could have been the father. Marshall and Delmar would have been too young. Also it is possible that William fathered a child before he married Lucy, and that child is a parent of Helen J. There are other possibilities including mistaken information given to the census taker. The 1940 census for Clay District also shows three persons named Park (no s) also in the district. They are Leroy A ., 75, and Minnie, 60, Park in one household, and Bonnie Park, a 22-year-old divorced daughter in the household of Mac and Stella Steele. However, there is no information that would connect Helen J. Parks to the three Park individuals. Said it before but I can not get over the number of people who were in WWII from Coudy. Most people know of their Dad or Mom serving but I was oblivious to all the greatest generation.
