Cousin Connie (Russell) Wykoff recently sent a great photo that was taken in 1946 at Niagra Falls. Folks in the photo are (left to right, standing)
- Myrl Edward and Berdina A. “Birdie” (Russell) Knickerbocker,
(sitting)
- Reuben Francis "Junior" and Mayfred F. (Hackett) Russell, and
- Lorraine Jean (Mitchell) and Dale William “Bill” Russell.
Birdie and Bill were brother and sister. Junior was their first cousin.
Bill retired on Feb. 3, 1995, after serving as Potter County sheriff for 11 years. Lorraine retired after more than 20 years working for the Coudersport school cafeteria. She also served as matron of the jail. In 1946, Bill turned 18 and enlisted in the US Army. Bill served in Japan as part of the occupation at the close of World War II, and he was promoted to sergeant. Connie is their daughter.
Myrl served in the US Navy during World War II, and he took part in five invasions in the South Pacific. His twin brother Earl served in the US Navy Seebees in the European Theater of Operations.
Two of their brothers were killed in action:
- Army private Harry was killed in France in 1944 and
- Marine private Dale was killed on Okinawa in 1945.

Mayfred Russell Family Donation to CASD Smart Labs
The family of Mayfred Russell contacted the Coudersport Area School District at the time of her passing in January to inquire about the possibility of setting up a memorial fund to honor Mrs. Russell’s long term commitment to the district that she served for many years as a board member and as the first business manager. The fund was established with the understanding that at some point her daughters would meet with the school administration to determine the best use of the funds by the district.
At a meeting held earlier this month, the family learned of the district’s plans to purchase a Smart Lab for each of the schools. The labs are customized learning environments designed specifically for each school to focus on 21st century skills such as critical thinking, problem solving, collaboration, communication and project management through the use of module-based programs. Learners explore science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) through applied technology while building connections to social studies, language, arts and other academic subject areas. After several board members, along with school staff members, visited a number of these labs at area elementary and high schools and were extremely impressed by the attributes of the labs, a decision was made at the April 19th school board meeting to invest in these labs for the benefit of the students in the Coudersport District.
The funding for this project is coming from the Capital Reserve Fund managed by the district for the purpose of investing in maintaining and improving the physical facilities as well as the education programs offered to students.
After learning more about the Smart Labs and the plans for their use, the family of Mrs. Russell along with the school’s administration representatives, felt that the $3,000 in the Mayfred Russell Memorial Fund would be best utilized to assist in offsetting some of the lab costs. Mrs. Russell’s daughters felt that their mom would most appreciate the funds going towards the elementary lab, as she was particularly fond of sparking the interest of young students who were just beginning their educational journey.
The Coudersport Area School District is very appreciative of this gift and believes that this investment in her name will ensure that Mayfred Russell’s tireless dedication to our students will continue on well into the future.
Sean Reams (Elementary Principal) accepts a donation check from
- Janet Russell Chalfant,
- Linda Russell Klingaman,
- Carol Russell Carts and
- Mary Russell Lilja (Daughters of Mayfred Russell) in the back row along with
- Steve Mongillo (High School Principal),
- Micki Brown (School Board Member - Curriculum Committee Chairperson) and
- Russ Streich (School Board President).
