One story bldg was Sobieski Ross' Land Office; first brick office in county (Potter), built 1853.

Fascinating! But this photo is not 1860 if it includes a bldg built by Owen Metzger in 1874. (Born in 1853, he was 21 years old when he built it.) Or was the building ghosted in? (oops! That ghostly house must be Ross' Land Office (Bingham Land Office?). Metzger's a little further back, 2 story) Having a little trouble with the caption, but it's an awesome picture.

Reference to the Shear Tannery, "Way Back When', Potter County Journal, 01 Jan 1933: "... One other old time place, the old tannery on Woodlawn avenue. William Shear ran it 60 years ago; Gay Cornelius, Chris Zimmerman and John Calkins were some of the employees."
