History of Logan County, W.Va. - by Henry Clay Ragland, Chapters 13-22 - The Genealogical Section CHAPTER XXI
While the Guyandotte Valley was being settled with hardy pioneers from Montgomery and the territory which formerly belonged in that ancient county, the Tug Fork of Sandy was being peopled by those who had for awhile paused in their march to the wilderness on the waters of the Clinch and the Holsten. From the time of the building of the old Block House at the forks of Sandy, about the year 1789, frequent visits were made from the cabins on the frontier by daring hunters to their friends in the old fort, but there is no account of any settlement being made on the West Virginia side of the river below the McDowell County line, or even above that line, until the year 1800, when Richard and John Ferrell, sons of Richard Ferrell, who was killed by the Indians in Thompson's Valley in 1780, settled on the farm where M.A. Ferrell now lives.
Richard Ferrell, the youngest brother, married a Miss Romaines, of Russell County, Virginia, and was the father of ten children - six sons and four daughters. His sons were
William, who married Mahala Tiller;
John R., who married Elizabeth Coleman;
Elizah, who married Barbara Jackson;
Richard, who married Letitia Eskew;
Evans, who married Martha Duty, and
Moses, who married Jane Lockhart.
His daughters were
Rachel, who married William Tiller;
Rebecca, who married Green Justice;
Elizabeth, who married Joab Justice, and
Nancy, who married Cummings Musie [?].
John Ferrell married Nancy Jackson of Russell County, Virginia. He was the father of three sons and two daughters. His sons were
William, who moved to Roane County;
Andrew, who married Polly Slater, and then moved to Missouri; and
John, who married Jane Taylor, and was through a long life, a prominent Baptist preacher, and was greatly beloved by all who knew him. His daughters were
Jennie, who married John Murphy, and
Levisa, who married Ralph Steel, of Island Creek.

History
Notes for JOHN FERRELLSr.
Peter Parrish Register, of New Kent, Va. lists three ladies, Elizabeth, Sarah and Mary as daughters of John Ferrell, born April 1715. Also of significance is the fact that the Alfords and Ross families were from New Kent County who's sons married into this Ferrell family. From 35 entries in North Carolina Deed books, and in the counties of Bertie, Edgecombe, Granville, Bute, Warren and Franklin, the following was put together: Starting on Aug. 10, 1734, John Ferrell purchased 100 acres from William Fish (his Father-in-law), in Bertie County, NC. This was the year he married Ann Fish. Over the next 53 years, John would accuire 4,464 acres either by grants or purchases. He would sell or deed to relatives, 3,231 acres during the same period. The last land sale recorded for John Ferrell, Sr. was on Sept. 11, 1792 to his son, John Ferrell, Jr. for 200 acres,,"on the south side of Tar River and on the Camp branch adajacent to Passion and Matthew Ferrell". John Ferrell died in January of 1793 and it is interesting to note the increased frequency and size of his land sales and other property (such as three slaves), as the year of his death approached. Following his death, the following records were recorded: June Ct. 1793 Bute Co. Ct. of P & Q Ordered John Ferrell list of Taxables be added to the list of Norris' district. consisting of 745 acres land & 4 black polls. (slaves)Undat ed. Franklin Co.
