My dear Mr. McFadden:
In response to your letter of the third instant, I have the honor to advise you that from the papers in the Revolutionary War pension claim, W.3496, it appears that JOHN BARR was born May 1, 1751, place not stated.
He enlisted in Delaware _(?) February, 1777, served as private in Captain George Bush's Company, Colonel Thomas Hartley's Regiment; was in the battles of Brandywine, Paoli, Germantown and Springfield, and was discharged January 18, 1781.
He was allowed pension on his application executed June 18, 1818, at which time he was a resident of Lycoming Clounty, Pennsylvania.
He died August 22, 1833, at Bald Eagle, Center County, Pennsylvania.
He married March 18, 1784, in New Castle County, Delaware, Mary Elcock who was born July 23, 1764. She was allowed pension on her application executed August 8, 1846, at which time she was a resident of Elk County, Pennsylvania.

John Barr enlisted in the Continential Army Feb 1777 in the state of Delaware in the Company commanded by Capt George Bush of the 11th Regiment commanded by Col. Thomas Hartley, the Pennsylvania Line. He continued in the service as a private until 18 Jan 1781 when he was discharged from service at Trenton in the state of New Jersey. He served 3 years and 11 months and participated in the Battles of
Springfield (Trenton, N. J.),
Brandywine,
Germantown,
Morristown, and
Paoli.
His war pension was $8 a month and was granted 18 Jun 1818 at which time he was a resident in Lycoming County, Pennsylvanina, (War file no. W3496 and Pension Certificate #4805). He and Mary were married by Rev. William McCanon in New Castle County, Delaware. John was a weaver by trade. He settled in Clinton County, near Lock Haven, Pennsylvania in 1787. He Later obtained land one mile below Cooks Run, Noys Township, Clinton County, Pennsylvania. The house was used as a school in 1825 and later sold to James Smith. In 1815 he lived in Bogg Township, as did his sons William and James. When John applied for his pension, his schedule of property included (besides his clothes and bedding) 1 cow, 7 sheep, 1 wal nut table, 1 set of cup/sauser, value $25.25; 5-tin cups, 11 spoons, 2-tin buckets, 1 pot and kettle, value $5.50; 1 churn, 1 tub, 6 plated, 6 knives & forks, value $2.30; 1 tea cannister, 1 spinning wheel, 1 teapot, value $2.37; 1 coffee mill, 2 bottom lift chairs, value $2.00; about 50 acres of land which lies "in the remote place of the county on Sinnemahoning Creek without any communication to it or any kind of carriage".
