You mention a Mike. If you mean Mike Vannatter, who lives upstate New York, he’s a cousin of mine. I think through Frank Handcock Vannatter (my mother’s father) and his second wife, Joycie. The Campbell Hotel didn’t have anything to do with my side. After reading about Cross Fork on Wikipedia, I assume, like the rest of the town, it’s long gone, although I have a picture of it, and several other pictures of the town from the 20s. They’re on postcards.
As for my messed up tree, I’ll tell you what causes some of it. My mother’s mother was born Flora Nettie Campbell, her sisters were Jewel, Ruth, Barbara Ella (the name she went by), and Roxie. She had one brother, Grover. To shorten the sordid story, my mother, born Henrietta Ruth Vannata (her spelling), was a Campbell because of Grover. So I have a branch of my tree twisted around another. If it helps, I’m my own cousin.
