Nancy originally married Joseph Marshall Glenn in 1880 in Logan County, WV. They had one child, Joseph “Joe" Glenn (1882-1956). In 1882, Joseph Marshall Glenn died from a fatal gunshot wound under mysterious circumstances.

Nancy later married William Anderson “Cap" Hatfield, Jr. on Oct. 11, 1883 in Logan County. Their children were
Joseph M. Glenn* (1882-1956);
Georgia Ann Hatfield (1886-1892);
Coleman Alderson Hatfield (1889-1970);
Sheppard Hatfield (1891-1898);
Robert Emmett Hatfield (1897-1975); and
Lionel Weaver Hatfield (1900-1983).

· NAN and CAP: Nancy Elizabeth "Nan” (1866-1942) and William Anderson "Cap" Hatfield II (1864-1930) were both at middle age by the time this photo was taken, years after the height of the feud era.

In the 1880s, Cap was considered by many as being the most volatile of feud participants. He was the second child of Devil Anse and Levicy Hatfield.

According to his son, Coleman Alderson Hatfield, Cap was suspicious and distrustful of others most of his adult life (what one might call paranoia today). He was forever concerned of being captured by lawmen or bounty hunters and hauled across the border to face murder charges in neighboring Kentucky.

Cap was amazingly proficient with a revolver, rifle, shotgun, knife, nightstick, or even with his bare knuckles. He was also crafty and intelligent.

It was Nan who eventually taught Cap how to read, which certainly revolutionized his life and worldview. From that point, Cap became a voracious reader, and even studied law. He ultimately passed the West Virginia bar exam and became a practicing attorney.

Later, Cap’s stepson, Joseph M. “Joe” Glenn, and his biological son, Coleman Alderson Hatfield, became lawyers, as well. Likewise, in due course, Coleman Alderson had a daughter (Cap's granddaughter) that passed the bar and practiced law.

Of this, Debbie Storey Bennett, a friend of the Hatfield and McCoy Feud Facebook page once posted, "That's a pretty amazing story! They were really tough people back then! I guess they had to be to survive. Maybe one day they will be able to say that about us!"

This image is of Nancy “Nan” Elizabeth Smith Hatfield (1866-1942), the widow of William Anderson “Cap” Hatfield, Jr. The gentleman standing next to her may be her son, Coleman Alderson Hatfield (1889-1970).

Nancy originally married Joseph Marshall Glenn in 1880 in Logan County, WV. They had one child, Joseph “Joe" Glenn (1882-1956). In 1882, Joseph Marshall Glenn died from a fatal gunshot wound under mysterious circumstances.

Nancy later married William Anderson “Cap" Hatfield, Jr. on Oct. 11, 1883 in Logan County. Their children were
Joseph M. Glenn* (1882-1956);
Georgia Ann Hatfield (1886-1892);
Coleman Alderson Hatfield (1889-1970);
Sheppard Hatfield (1891-1898);
Robert Emmett Hatfield (1897-1975); and
Lionel Weaver Hatfield (1900-1983).

Brandon Ray Kirk, a friend of this page, added, "Cap and Nan also had these children:
Levicy Emma “Pinkie” Hatfield (born May 1894);
Louisa Hatfield (1896-1989);
Preston Hatfield (born January 1900, died before 1910);
Georgia “Flossie” Hatfield (1902-1968); and
Muriel May Hatfield (born about 1908)."

*Joe M. Glenn (1882-1956) was extremely close to his step-father, Cap Hatfield, and followed in Cap’s footsteps, studying law and passing the bar.
