| the Delhi Monitor 11 Jul 1878 p.4 c.2 "HE HAD NO LEGS, but he played on a profane fiddle and so she skipped out with him. Under the heading, the InterOcean publishes a letter from G. O. C. Bond, Edgewood, Iowa, in which he states that on the 20th day of last August, Albert W. Noble, a cripple and a poor, drunken set (he walks on his knees and plays the violin and begs on the cars and on the streets and in saloons) ran away with his wife, Melissa Bond. They traveled all over Iowa and went into Illinois and lived at Durand Station. He had them arrested and tried and they were found guilty. She begged so hard that the court released her on condition that she would go home to Iowa and take care of her four children and his sentence was suspended as long as he behaved himself. They are traveling together again and Bond wants them arrested and punished.\" | ||

| LifeSketch | Melissa Knickerbocker was born in Potter County, Pennsylvania 28 December 1847. She married Phillip Minor/Miner and had one daughter, Orpha Evangeline. They moved to Iowa when Orpha was young. After Phillip’s death Melissa married George O. C. Bond and their first child, William Nelson, was born about 1862 (see the 1870 census). They had two more children and the youngest, George Frank, was born about November 1869 (see 1870 census). While the children were still young Melissa left with a man named Albert Noble and went to Illinois. They were located and arrested and she was released on the condition that she return home to take care of her children. However, once again she left with Albert Noble. This time they went to Michigan, where they married on the 10 July 1878 at Detroit. She is recorded as “Melly” on the marriage record. Shortly thereafter, in 1879, they moved to Hamilton, Ontario. Albert and Melissa, now going by the name Ellen, had three children, Effie and twins Albert and Alberta. Did her children in Iowa know that they had ½ siblings in Hamilton? But it is interesting to note that her son George Frank Bond did name a daughter Alberta Effie, which were the names of his two half-sisters. | |
