For the benefit of our newest members, Donna Ellison Rogala & Carla Ellison Steffan, I am focusing on their 2nd great grandfather, George W Ellison.
George was the younger brother of our Dunn ancestor, Sarah Elizabeth Ellison.
Living in Franklin County, Tennessee, Zachariah John Ellison and Mary Henley married and raised a family. The first born in the family was
- Sarah Elizabeth, followed by
- William, then
- George W, followed by
- Alice.
Federal census records show that in the years 1850 and 1860, Mary was living alone, Zachariah working away from home.
When George was 14 years old, in 1863, Sarah married a Union soldier from Potter County, PA, Michael Dunn. As most know, Michael was badly wounded six months later, losing both legs, but survived and was able to thrive with his wife, Sarah, on their homestead in Allegany township, in Potter County, PA.
This move of Sarah to Seven Bridges, Allegany township, Potter County, PA changed the lives of her younger siblings, including George W Ellison.
Zachariah died in 1868, precipitating a move to Allegany township for Mary Henley Ellison and her children.
By 1870 George appears on the Federal Census record living with his mother in Allegany township.
Here in Potter County, George met and married Ulysses resident, Helen Orilla Peasley in 1872. A year later, in 1873, their first child,
- William George Ellison,
was born in Seven Bridges, Allegany township, Potter County, PA, followed by
- Jennie (1877-1939),
- Michael (1880-1880),
- Mary Mae (1882-1929),
- Sarah (1884-1946),
- Emily Anna (1890-1982) and finally,
- Deforest Henry (1893-1956).
Deforest created the lineage that ran to his descendants, Donna & Carla Ellison.
By 1880 George and Helen Ellison moved to their own farm in Ulysses township, Potter County, PA.
In 1918 George's older sister, Sarah Elizabeth Dunn, passed away in Seven Bridges. Perhaps poor health played a part in George's and Ellen's residences, because in 1920 George was living in Belfast, Allegany County, New York in the household of his son, William and daughter-in-law, Ella. In the marital status column for George is a “W” indicating he was a widowed. However, in the same year, 1920, in Boliver, New York, Ellen is seen living in the household of her daughter, Mary Ellison Baldwin, and in the marital status was written “W” indicating that she, too, was widowed. However, by 1927 George was also living in the household of his and Ellen's daughter, Mary Ellison Baldwin. There, he died from pneumonia. Helen died nine years later in 1936.
On November 6, 1894, George's mother, Mary Henley Ellison, died in Seven Bridges, Potter County, PA. She was buried in the cemetery lot purchased by her son-in-law, Michael Dunn. When you visit to the Raymond Cemetery, near Gold, PA you will see the large, Michael Dunn & Sarah E Dunn memorial and a few feet from it is a stone with the name Mary Ellison.

The Bolvar Breeze article, dated Thursday, December 29, 1927 suggests he died ... in 1927, as you mention in your text, vs 1932 here. Do you know anything more about this discrepancy? I have his birth date 1851, taken a while ago from your on-line tree, but that may have changed in the meantime, or the birthdate here may be incorrect. (Your text says he was 14 in 1863, hence birthdate ca 1851.) Please excuse me, if you've already addressed this somewhere. It looks like both dates on this memorial are incorrect, if I'm on the correct George Ellison. This stone was clearly added later, and mistakes often appear at this juncture, it seems.
