| LifeSketch | No known connection to the husbands of Rebecca Browne, Abigail Warren, or Constance Hopkins. No known connection to anyone in New England. From https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Snow-1374 UPDATE: The Nicholas Snowe who was baptized 25 Jan 1599/1600 in St. Leonard Shoreditch, Hoxton, North London, son of Nicholas Snow II and Elizabeth Rowlles was buried 3 days later on 28 January.[2] Therefore, the emigrant to New England has been detached as son of this parent. One frequent genealogical error that we CAN correct immediately is the notion that Nicholas Snow II (b. 1578) was from Yorkshire. This unfortunate error come from confusion of \"Bowes,\" a village in Yorkshire with \"Bow\" (or \"Bowe,\" old spelling), which was a district of East London adjacent to Stepney, Shoreditch and Hoxton (all within a 3 miles radius) districts, all of which are definitely associated with this Snow family (christenings, deaths, marriages). It is highly likely that Nicholas Snow II was born at his family\'s home in Bow, near Stepney, in the county of Middlesex, Greater London. High Ongar (aka Angar), Essex, also mentioned frequently in these records, was just 22 miles from Stepney. It may have been the family home of Katherine Harewood, mother of Nicholas Snow II.[3] Most indications from the record point to this Snow family\'s British Medieval origins as being from County Somerset, in south-west England. Y-DNA testing by direct male descendants of the Nicholas Snow of the \"Anne\" has confirmed a Normandy and ultimately Denmark/Sweden origin for the Snow clan (Haplo-group = I-M253).[4] A Snow ancestor no doubt accompanied or followed King William the Conqueror when he successfully invaded England in 1066. Nicholas Snow II\'s direct ancestors have been traced to the early 13th Century in Porlock, Somerset, 250 miles west of London on the Bristol Channel of the Irish Sea.[5] They were yeomen or independent farmers there, building themselves up by favorable marriages, trade and education to become London-based merchants, very likely in the wool trade. In 1666, Nicholas Snow (b. 1578) was called a \"citizen of London and armorer.\" IF this is the same Nicholas Snow - he would have been 88 years old then.[6] On May 9, 1599, Nicholas Snow II married Elizabeth Rowles (aka Rowelles) at Saint Dunstan\'s church, Stepney, Greater London, Middlesex, England. It is the same church where his own 1578 birth is said to have been recorded (some genealogies say he was christened at High Ongar, Essex). Most genealogies credit the couple with three sons: Nicholas (b. Jan. 1600), Anthony (b. 1602), and William (b. 1606), all christened at St. Leonard\'s church, Shoreditch, near Stepney, London. The only citation from contemporary records I have located comes from a 1947 genealogy by Russell Snow Hitchcock.[7] An interesting fact is that the Parish of St. Leonard\'s adjoins St. Mary\'s, Whitechapel, London, where in 1617 Stephen Hopkins, father of Constance, married his second wife, Elizabeth Fisher, who accompanied him on the Mayflower three years later. Constance Hopkins married Nicholas Snow (of the \"Anne\") before May 1627 in Plymouth MA.[8] Even Nicholas Snow II\'s death information is controversial. Over 9,000 family trees have him dying one day BEFORE he was married in May 1599... Others have a death date of May 6, 1630 while others say 1644 or May 5, 1649. No official death record has been found in London. He may of course have died either later (as the 1666 Will indicates - although that may be a different Nicholas Snow) or outside London. The truth is that we have no official contemporary document for his death date and place. The same is true for his wife, Elizabeth Rowles (aka Rowelles). As it is clear he is no longer alive, I have adopted \"after February 13, 1666\" based on the Will cited above that lists a Nicholas Snow as alive then. When new research clears this up, this can be changed. Sources ? http://socrates.berkeley.edu/~ahnelson/PARISH/Leonard.html - birth & death records at St. Leonard\'s in London. ? Bowe or Bow is a district of Greater London 2 miles from Stepney, where St. Dunstan\'s church is located.
