Jeremy was a victim of the Virginia Tech shootings. He had two undergraduate degrees from Penn State, one in biochemistry and molecular biology from 2003, and another in civil engineering from 2006. He grew up on a small farm in the central Pennsylvania borough of Bellefonte, where his father, Michael, raised steer and sheep. His career goal was to be a civil engineer.
Herbstritt, 27, was from Bellefonte , Pa. , according to Penn State University , his alma mater and his father's employer. He had two undergraduate degrees from there, one in molecular biology and biochemistry and the other in civil engineering, according to The New York Times.
A 1998 graduate of Bellefonte Area High School in Pennsylvania and a Penn State graduate, Herbstritt was a Virginia Tech graduate student studying civil engineering.
He loved to run and was the kind of person who went out of his way to make others feel comfortable, the Times reported.
"His smile is half his face," family friend Pam Vaiana, the principal of Herbstritt's Catholic grammar school, told the Times.
He was the oldest in a family of four children - two boys and two girls - and was raised on a farm in western Pennsylvania , the paper reported. He was known for being happy and outgoing and was a track-and-field and cross-country running star.
Several former coaches said he wanted to compete in marathons for the rest of his life and had already run in three.

Jeremy Michael Herbstritt was born on November 6, 1979, in St Marys, Pennsylvania, the first child of Michael Thomas & Margaret "Peg" Meier Herbstritt.
His father worked as an electrical engineer at Penn State and his mother was a nurse.
He was the oldest of four children. He was raised on a farm in the small community of Spring Township in Western Pennsylvania. He attended the Catholic grammar school in Bellefonte, PA.
At nearby Bellefonte High School, Jeremy stood out for his cheerfulness and outgoing personality - even being voted "most talkative" in his class one year - but it was on the track where he really left his mark.
He was a member of the cross-country and track and field teams, and for three years led the school's long-distance relay team. Several of his former coaches told The Associated Press that he was gearing up for a lifetime of competing in marathons, and had already competed in three with his family.
He had

Jeremy, at age 27, was doing graduate work in civil engineering and hoped to begin a career in environmental work.
He already had two undergraduate degrees under his belt from Penn State: one in biochemistry and molecular biology, and another in civil engineering. He was known as the kind of student who went out of his way to make others feel at ease. Jeremey was in his second semester pursuing a master’s degree in civil engineering at Virginia Tech. Before April 16th, Jeremy's parents had gone to Boston on Monday to watch his sister, Jennifer, run in the Boston Marathon as part of a charity group, Centre Volunteers in Medicine. They were planning on stopping by Virginia Tech to see their son that night. Jennifer Herbstritt wanted her older brother, Jeremy, to run the Boston Marathon with her Monday.
Tragically, Jeremy became one of the 32 Victims at Virginia Tech and was killed on April 16, 2007, in Blacksburg, Virginia, at the age of 27.
