His father worked as an electrical engineer at Penn State and his mother was a nurse. He was the oldest of four children. He was raised on a farm in the small community of Spring Township in Western Pennsylvania. He attended the Catholic grammar school in Bellefonte, PA. At nearby Bellefonte High School, Jeremy stood out for his cheerfulness and outgoing personality - even being voted "most talkative" in his class one year - but it was on the track where he really left his mark. He was a member of the cross-country and track and field teams, and for three years led the school's long-distance relay team. Several of his former coaches told The Associated Press that he was gearing up for a lifetime of competing in marathons, and had already competed in three with his family. He had - one brother, Joseph and two sisters, - Jennifer & - Stephanie. Jeremy, at age 27, was doing graduate work in civil engineering and hoped to begin a career in environmental work. He already had two undergraduate degrees under his belt from Penn State: one in biochemistry and molecular biology, and another in civil engineering. He was known as the kind of student who went out of his way to make others feel at ease. Jeremey was in his second semester pursuing a master’s degree in civil engineering at Virginia Tech. Before April 16th, Jeremy's parents had gone to Boston on Monday to watch his sister, Jennifer, run in the Boston Marathon as part of a charity group, Centre Volunteers in Medicine. They were planning on stopping by Virginia Tech to see their son that night. Jennifer Herbstritt wanted her older brother, Jeremy, to run the Boston Marathon with her Monday. Martin and Peter survived but Charles was wounded at Gettysburg buried at the Prospect Hill Cemetery so far from home that it's doubtful his parents ever got to visit his grave site. Martin's father died the same year. After the war was over, Martin married Mary Hagerman Krieg and they had 16 children together. On March 23, 1892 Mary passed away. He then married Margaret Kreckle and they had one daughter together.
