Ernst, one of the oldest and most respected residents of Sartwell Creek, passed away May 31, 1930. He was born in Hason Castle (Hessen-Kassel), Germany, April 5, 1848, being 82 years, one month and 25 days old at the time of his death. He was the youngest son of the late Tobias C. and Anna Elizabeth Smith Ernst, and at the age of five years, he with his parents and only brother sailed for this country, his birthday occurring while upon the water. The voyage across the water lasted nine weeks. Upon reaching this country, ... weeks. Upon reaching this country, the family moved to Sartwell Creek where his father purchased a farm, where the deceased has lived adjoining farms with his brother, for 66 years. His brother William H. Ernst preceeded him in death on October 11, 1923. On July 4, 1880 he was united in marriage to Lydia F. Lehman, to this union four children being born. Two died in infancy and Fred C. Ernst who resides at the old homestead and Irma A. Eckert of Roulette who with the widow survive him; also five grandchildren, Frankie, June and Jane Ernst and Florence and Charley Eckert. Funeral services were held at the Sartwell Creek church, June 3rd, words of comfort being spoken by Rev. Chas. Lee of Chandlers Valley, PA, assisted by Rev. Howard Duell of the home church. He was wounded during the 36-day Battle for Iwo Jima in 1945. In 2008, Wayne said that in one fight the Marines and Japanese were throwing grenades at each other like baseballs. He had taken cover in a shell crater when a Japanese grenade landed in his crater. He scrambled out of that crater and took cover in another. There was a live grenade already in the second crater. Wayne desperately tried to get out, but the grenade exploded before he could get away. Wayne was seriously wounded, but he survived. (Wayne died Dec. 26, 2013.) The photo shows Wayne (left) and my father Jake Hamilton on Maui before the Battle of Iwo Jima. A base on Maui, Territory of Hawaii, was used by the 4th Marine Division between battles. Jake suffered a minor wound and returned to the battle after 10 days of recovery and rehab. Melvin Setzer and Dick Foley served with Wayne and Jake and they were wounded, too. Melvin was seriously wounded. Almost half of the men in the division were killed or wounded during the battle.
