My maternal grandmother, "Lucille (Sallie) Lawrence THOMAS/LEMLEY was the daughter of Robert "Bob" THOMAS (a.k.a. Sanford LEMLEY) and Malissa Jane WHITEMAN. The WHITEMAN family migrated into WV (once VA) ca1847 from Washington Co., PA. It is believed that they were possibly "Mennonite" but it's speculative. The THOMAS, LEMLEY, BROOKOVER and STEWART bio's will follow.

Malissa Jane WHITEMAN was born on March 22, 1858 and though I was always told she was from an area called "Minnie", my cousin, a WHITEMAN, from the area tells me she was but a small girl in an area of Wetzel Co., WV called "Honeytown Bend". I know that she attended Snuff's Chapel as well as a school on what was once known to the my folks as "WHITEMAN'S KNOB" or MTN., though only a small portion of the area is now owned by ancestors. Malissa was known to my line as "Rebecca" yet another cousin who's also a great grandson of Malissa Jane says his family knew her as "Missy and Janie". She died in 1942 in Preston Co., WV. She married abt 1887-1889 in the Cumberland area of Allegheny Co., Maryland to Robert H. THOMAS, son of Nancy THOMAS of OH/WV/PA, but went by the name of Sanford LEMLEY. That's how I grew-up knowning of him, as well from their daughter, my grandmother Lucille and her siblings. My grandparents raised me from the time I was 6 weeks old so the information I have here regarding the WHITEMAN'S is 1st hand family heritage that was told to me while growing up and I'm doing the best I can to remember everything and I'm going by old postcards, letters and writings on the back of old family photos to help jog my memory. I also traveled back to these areas with m y grandparents as well as with their youngest daughter, my aunt, many many times - so I'm going by what I seen and heard, too.

Malissa Jane WHITEMAN and Robert H.Sanford THOMAS/LEMLEY had 5 children together, as well as other children from their previous marriages to BROOKOVER'S, whom I'll list later in this bio. Malissa and Sanford LEMLEY'S children are as follows:

1 - Lula Mae, b. Oct 1889.
2 - Cleveland Lugh b. Feb 1892.
3 - Minnie Florence b. Mar 1895.
4 - Lucelia Lawrence "Celia/Sallie" b. Feb 1896.
5 - Olena "Lena" b. May 1899.

1 - Lula Mae married Howard Coberly and their two children are Gerald and Vera.
2 - Cleveland Lugh m. 1st) Flosside Belgium COOPER having (4) children: Lugh Thomas and Hugh Denver (twins); Ester and Mary K. (all LEMLEY'S).
Cleveland married a 2nd time later in life to Hester DAVIS b. Jun 1907.
3 - Minnie Florence 1st m. Thomas CARR. They lived in Junior and later Clarksburg, WVA. I only know of one daughter, her name was Virginia. And later married Franklin M. Tedrow of WVA.
4 - Luceilia Lawrence (my grandmother) m. Floyd Columbus SIMMONS. They met and married in Elkins, WV; later moving to Clarksburg where many of my aunts and uncles, including my mother was born. They moved to Baltimore, MD after WWII for job related reasons and it was here that they both died.
5 - Olena, otherwise known to our family as "Lena" married first to William CONRAD and together they had at least 4 children that I'm aware of: Kathleen, Charles, Juanita and Wm. Russell Jr. She later married Dillie Springston

Malissa Jane WHITEMAN was married prior to Robert "BobSanford " THOMAS/LEMLEY to John L. BROOKOVER b. in 1851 in Tyler Co., WV though some researchers have in born in Gilmer and Wetzel. They were married on Aug. 20, 1876 at the home of Malissa's father's, "Marshall WHITEMAN" in Minnie, WV. John L. BROOKOVER and Malissa Jane WHITEMAN had (6) children together and they are as follows:

1 - T. A. - no other information.
2 - James W. b. 1878 probably in Wetzel Co., WV.
3 - Jessie Theodore was b. Ju. 1879; d. 1962. He married Flora May HAWKINS b. Sept 15, 1881; d. Feb. 1, 1972. They m. on Nov. 12, 1898 and thus far I only have one child listed for them. Her name was Cora May BROOKOVER, b. September 25, 1904; d. March 10, 1983. She m. Aug 1, 1882 in Marion, WV to Lloyd S. SMITH, and in 1922 to Warden Perry COLLINS.
4 - Linda was b. abt 1887; d. Aug. 24, 1969 and married a BOURNE. I have not worked on her line yet, but hope to in the near future.
5 - George Washington was b. April 26, 1888. I have no other information on him either.
6 - Ida Jane "Eliza". We knew her as "Jane". She was born on August 3, 1889 and died before her 21st birthday of "Tyhpoid Fever". Though she was John L. BROOKOVER'S daughter, Malissa took "Jane" with her when she married my great grandfather, "Robert/Sanford THOMAS/LEMLEY and was raised with my grandmother and her siblings as one of their own. She's buried in WV.

Malissa Jane WHITEMAN was the daughter of John Marshall WHITEMAN, known as "Marsh". He was born Feb 15, 1828 in Finley Twp., Washington Co., PA; died in 1922 in Wetzel Co., WV. He married Oct 1850 to Eliza Jane BUCHANAN at big Fishing Creek in Wetzel and together they had (10) children and they were as follows:

1 - David Andrew was b. August 24, 1852; d. May 20, 1856.
2 - Phebe Hannah was b. on September 15, 1854 in Wetzel Co., WV; d. Apr. 17, 1914 in Parkersburg, WVA. She was m. to George F. DILLION and I know of one son by them; Ross DILLON. She also m. Jan. 1872 in Magnolia District, Wetzel Co., to George Washington Shepherd b. Mar 22, 1848; d. Feb 28, 1920 and I have (12) children by them. If anyone would like their names, you may email me below.
3 - Sarah Anne was b. Feb 1856; d. 1929 and was married to a MCGINNIS; they had a daughter Rose and you can see their photos by clicking here.
4 - Malissa Jane (above) m. John L. BROOKOVER and Robert "Bob" Sanford THOMAS/LEMLEY.
5 - Alice "Elsie" M. b. Sep 1860; d. Jun 1950. She m. on Nov. 1879 to Wm. M. (a Twin) BROOKOVER b. Mar 1854; d. July 1930. Wm. M. BROOKOVER was the brother of Malissa Jane's 1st husband John L. BROOKOVER. I have (12) children by them and will list them here later.
6 - Mary Marshall b. 1862; d. 1922. She m. Nov 1879 in New Martinville, WV to Theodore WABLE; together they had (9) children.

7 - Frances Laverna b. 1864; d. 1965. She married twice; 1st to Jacob BATTON and they had a son named Clyde. Later to William Henry WETZEL b. 1856; d. 1942. Both are buried at the Northview Cemetery in WV. I have (8) children by this marriage.

8 - James Matthias b. Jun 1867; d. Jun 1917 in Minnie, WV. He m. Lucy Bell MORGAN/BATTON b. 1864; d. 1957. Both are buried at Wells Cemetery in Minnie. I have (10) children by this marriage. 9 - Virginia Belle b. Apr 1870. I have nothing else on her.
10 - Delia (Deala) Emeline b. Nov 1873. She m. on Apr 1892 in Wetzel Co., WV to Jacob Alfred "Jake" FLUHARTY on Wetzel. And I have (5) children listed from their union. Both are presumed buried in WV. I have their records and haven't placed alot of this in my computer familytree program yet - check back for updates here.

Matthias John WHITEMAN was born who was b. abt 1797 in the Twp. of Finley, Washington Co., PA and Elsa "Alice" NEWBERRY b. abt 1800. The WHITEMANS then migrated from Wash. PA to Wetzel Co., WV in 1847. Together they had (6) children that I know of and they are as follows;

1 - Josiah b. 1822/1823.
2- Alexander b. 1823.
3 - John Marshall b. February 15, 1828 (above great grandfather).
4 - Phoebe - no other data at this time.
5 - Elvira b. abt 1834.
6 - Robert W. b. 1836-1837. He m. 1867 in Wetzel Co., WV to Elizabeth E. KIMBLE and together they had (6) children.

Isaac WHITEMAN, "I." was born on born in 1764, a native-born agriculturist from West Finley Twp in Washington Co., PA. He married Eleanor MAUGHAMAN, born March 7, 1766 from the same area. Isaac SR. was regarded with high esteem within his community being known as a self-made man whom worked his way up (the hardway) to become a very honoorable, solid and reputatable man to his name. It is written by Washington Co., PA historians that none held a higher respect in his community then Isaac WHITEMAN. He and Eleanor were the parents of (7) children and they are as follows:

1 - Andrew b. Abt 1795 m. Eleanor UNK.
2 - Matthias John b. abt 1797.
3 - Esther b. abt 1800.
4 - Susan b. abt 1803.
5 - John B. b. abt 1809 m. Jane JOHNSON.
6 - Isaac Jr., (above).
7 - Infant - died between 1794 - 1821 as a baby.

Biography of Isaac WHITEMAN II; brother to John Marshall "Marsh" WHITEMAN

Isaac WHITEMAN, "II." who was born on March 1, 1820 at Razortown, Canton Twp., Wash. Co., PA and Sarah Ann BEDIILLION whom were married on December 20, 1840 in Wash. Co., PA. He worked on the farm most of his young adult life because not three years after his birth, his father, "Isaac WHITEMAN, "SR." died. Isaac had to learn very early how to earn money for his widow mother whom already had a very large family to provide for. He started out mowing wheat for a neighbor and it is recorded that he made 6 1/4 cents for (2) days of work. Because young Isaac had so many responsibilites helping his mother a descent education was all but abandoned out of necessity. But nevertheless, young Issac Jr. learned farming for all it was worth taking on jobs in the first (40) years of his life on rented farmlands to working as a farm laborer. They had a total of (9) children as follows:

1 - Christian B. b. 1841; d. 1843.
2 - Mathias John. b. July 27, 1843 m. Mary E. RYAN.
3 - Eleanor b. August 15, 1845 m. Thomas RYAN.
4 - Mary Jane b. March 13, 1848; d. March 16, 1879.
5 - Elsie Margaret b. February 1, 1850 m. William K. JONES.
6 - John Bearley b. December 29, 1852 m. Margaret J. HERTZOG.
7 - Susannah b. May 5, 1855 m. Josiah G. DINSMORE.
8 - Sarah Elizabeth b. May 29, 1859 m. Collin NEWLAND.
9 - Phoebe Brockman b. September 23, 1861 m. Andrew EWING.
