Here is information I have concerning your William Snook from Allegany Co., MD from my book "History and Genealogy of the Henry Snook Family of Frederick Co., MD"--2009 (p.383-6). The complete book is available free as a pdf file from me but what I have attached below is all I have on this line. Although I found no reference to William Snook's marriage the courthouse listings of marriages shows Julia Snook m. Henry Myers so William marrying a Myers is consistent and the Myers were probably brother and sister. Your information indicates where William Snook moved after 1810. As mentioned in the Conclusions below, DNA testing of a known male Snook descendent of William Snook can tell if he is of Dutch/English descent. I am the Snook Surname Administrator for FamilyTreeDNA and English Snooks are easily distinguished from German Snooks even at the 12 marker level (cost for 12 marker test $99). I'm not sure how many markers are needed to distinguish Dutch ancestry from German as none have been tested so far.

A. Matthias Snook of Allegany Co., MD
The will of Matthias Snook, written 30Nov1790, probated in Allegany Co. 29Dec1790 (Liber A.,p.1; Note: record at MD Hall of Records, Annapolis, WK 871 is abstracted as follows: (spelling as it appears in the original)
...Give and bequeath to dearly beloved wife Barboah Snook all and singular with my beloved two friegs (friends) Samel Elitte and Joseph Woruok I appoint executors...and singler all my said and tenements to remain in my beloved wife's hand as long as she remains my widow and be equally divided between my beloved children... I bequeath that my oldest son John Snook have the gray colt and heffer which he calls his and also to my same, Jamey, a black colt, 2 years old past and all and singular my goods and chattles to remain in my wife's hands during the same above mentioned ...Witnesses: Samuel Banett, Samuel Ellit and Joseph Wanrock.
Although only one son is named in the above will, several land patents for the land of Matthias, name the rest of his children: (Patents of MD; 1803, Liber IC#Q, folio 173; at Maryland Hall of Records.
"The following are entitled to one child's part of the real estate of Matthias Snook, consisting of Lots # 3742, 3743, 3744 lying in Allegany Co., payment for them having been received from Matthias who was a settler westward of Fort Cumberland:"
(a) George Whetzel and wife Elizabeth, of Allegany Co., MD.
(b) William Snook, of Allegany Co., MD.
(c) John Snook, formerly of Allegany Co., MD, now of Fayette Co., PA.
(d) Peter Youst and wife Margaret, of Monongahala Co., VA.
(e) Henry Myer and wife Julia, of Allegany Co., MD.
(f) Jonathan Anderson and wife Catherine, formerly of Allegany Co., MD, now of the State of Kentucky.
All of the above sold their share of Matthias' land to Conrad Corbus for 20 pounds each. The patents read as follows:
...that there were laid out and surveyed pursuant to the Resolution of the General Assembly, posted at the April session 1787, amongst the lots westward of Ft. Cumberland, the following, lying in the county aforesaid and contiguous to each other, viz. #3742, 3743, 3744 each containing 50 acres.
That the commissioners appoint, in virtue of an Act of Assembly, passed at Nov. session 1788, allotted and awarded the said lots to Matthias Snook as settler on and entitled to a preference in the purchase of the same. That the said Snook departed this life, leaving Catherine, intermarried with Jonathan Anderson; John Snook; Anna, intermarried with Conrad Corbus; Margaret, intermarried with Peter Youst; Elizabeth, intermarried with George Whetzell; William Snook; and Julia, intermarried with Henry Myer, his only children and by his will, duly made, devised that all his lands should remain in his wife Barbary Snook's hands as long as she should remain his widow and be equally divided between his children.
...Corbus petitions the court to grant him the patent.
The Clerk of the Circuit Court of Allegany Co., MD has supplied the following marriages from his records.
(Note: According to him, they are the only Snook marriages recorded in Allegany Co. to 1900, however, I'm sure he did not consider other possible spellings of the name Snook).

Other than Julia, the marriage of John Snook may refer to the son of Matthias named above. The other marriages may be those of Snooks, who are members of the two Snook families of Frederick Co., MD (progenitors being Henry Snook of this book and John Snoke given in another publication by this author) who married on their way west.

One other record pertaining to Matthias Snook was found in Washington Co., MD. (Bill of Sale, Liber E,p.793) The Bill of Sale was recorded 27May1788 between Matthias Snuke and James Johnson for 5 pounds 5 shillings for a stock of black cattle.
Additional information obtained since publication of the above in “History and Genealogy of the Snook Families of Frederick Co., Maryland”-1980 is the following:
From "Snook Newsletter" (Vol. 8, #1; Feb. 1991) by Betty Welliver (no longer published):
p.1 "...Venita Foster (7906 Oak Knoll Ln., Palos Heights, IL 60463) Snook ancestor is Catherine (Katie) Snuiche/Snook whom she was told was of Dutch-English parentage, coming to this country ca.1773, landing in New York. In 1774, she married John Youst/Yost in Elizabeth, NJ. They lived in Trenton, NJ, while John served with the Continental Army, then lived in Cumberland, Allegany Co., MD, where all but one of their children were born. About 1790, they settled on Indian Creek, Monongalia Co., VA (now WV). Among there several children was Peter (Yost) born ca 1778, who married 28Jan1800 Mary Snook in Monongalia, indicating other Snooks were present."
p.2 "...letter sent to me (B. Welliver) in 1985 by Lloyd Ambrose, 31 Summit Rd., Greene, RI 02827 (Note: no longer alive), I found the name of Eleanor F. Carter, 1700 Ritchie Ave., Fairmont, WV, who is also researching this particular family line (Matthias Snook). In a copy of her letter to Lloyd she states she is searching for info on the Snook family. "Peter Yost born ca 1778, New Jersey, married Margaret Snook born ca 1778, New Jersey. They were married 28Jan1800 in Monongalia Co., WV. Peter had a brother William Yost born in Cumberland, MD, ca 1783. His parents came to Monongalia Co., WV, after William's birth. Peter and William were sons of John and Catherine Snook Yost.
John Yost came from Bavaria, Germany, and Catherine Snook came from Holland and English descent. She was a women well remembered as being a fine Scholar, well read both in English and German, arriving here about 1773. They met and married at Elizabeth, NJ, lived in Trenton, NJ during the Revolutionary War, where he served in the Continental Army 7 years. We don't know if Catherine and Margaret Snook were related or who their parents were. Would appreciate any info you could give me on these Snooks or where I could find info on them".

"Snook Newsletter" (Vol. 12, #2, April 1995):
"Another letter recently received from Charles W. Glover, 5732 Newlin Ave., Whittier, CA 90601, who wrote Sniuche was one of his family lines...Seeking information on the family of Margaret 'Mary' Sniuche, married 28Jan1800 to Peter Youst, b.1778 near Cumberland, MD. Her parents were Matthias Sniuche and wife Barbara, believed to reside in Allegany Co., MD."
Conclusions:
Matthias must be considered contemporary with Henry Snook (SN) and John Snuke (S). From the above it appears that Matthias Snuich/Snook came to this country shortly before the Revolutionary War and possible was of Dutch/English ancestry. He probably served in the Revolution and received land for his services in Allegany Co. and is not related to either Henry Snook (SN) or John Snoke (S) of Frederick Co., MD. It is possible that DNA testing of a male Snook descendant of this family might further confirm these postulates.

Margaret WETZEL, age 90, + 3/30/1884 at the Marion Co Poorhouse. No other information in the record. I believe she's living with Henry WETZEL on the 1870 census of Mannington District but I don't have any notes on her from 1880 (perhaps already at the poorhouse?) This appears to be the same Margaret who was on the 1850 census of Taylor Co, and the same Henry in her household at that time.
Whether she's a widow or single, or just how accurate her age is (she seems a lot older than her apparent children), I don't know, but there is evidently some connection to the family of George and Elisabeth (SNOOK) WETZEL, who lived on the head of Miracle Run in western Monongalia Co.
This George was born in MD per the 1850 census (Elisabeth is not found at that time, probably dead) and is known to have come to WV from Allegany Co, MD. His marriage is documented in Allegany Co, I believe through a land record, but I only know this at second hand. His wife was a sister to Barbara SNOOK, wife of Peter YOUST of the same neighborhood. The name of the wives' father is known but has slipped my enfeebled mind. The father is perhaps a brother to Catherine SNOOK (1750s?-1830s?), the wife of John YOUST Sr of Monongalia Co, since one of their sons described George WETZEL as "a cousin by marriage."
Records of the family are very sparse. The last trace of George that I know of is a list of debts due the estate of Dr Nicholas B YOUST, on which WETZEL appears as "insolvent," in the early 1850s. George did not own land and left no estate to be probated. He lived a couple miles west of Fairview, in the area of Highland Church, and his family and connections are intermarried with mine.
George gives his age as 82 on the 1850 census. In 1834, however, David YOUST gave this statement in re: a Rev War pension claim George had filed: "David Youst says he has known Whetsel for 26 years -- is a cousin of his by marriage -- previous to the passage of the Pension Law of 1832 he frequently heard Whetsel say that he himself was not in the War of the Revolution but that his father was -- Whetsel can't exceed 60 years of age." The file, R11492, does not contain WETZEL's original declaration, only a couple of affidavits that say his claim is fraudulent. No doubt the original papers were extracted by the US Attorney Singleton, who never returned them to the files, when he was investigating fraudulent pension claims. It would be most useful to know what service he claimed, and what bio information he provided, as even if he was lying there might be something worthwhile.
The known and presumed children of George WETZEL and Elisabeth SNOOK are:
1. John WETZEL, +12/11/1875, age 74 yrs, married Eliza KENDALL, lived at Fairview, Marion Co. Death record gives him as son of "Geo & Elisabeth."
2. Julianne WETZEL, born abt 1805/08?, married in 1825 to Benjamin BARTHOLOW, dau of George WETZEL
3. Henry WETZEL, born abt 1812 in MD, living 1850 next door to George, presumed to be a son.
4. MARY WETZEL, born 4/17/1812, + 4/16/1882, married Joseph JONES.
George WETZEL was living with her in 1850. I don't know any evidence except family hearsay that she was nee WETZEL,
but she had at least one illeg daughter, Amanda (m William KUHN), who also went by the name WETZEL.
5. Coonrod WETZEL, 1818-1898, presumed to be a son; married Julianne TOOTHMAN, moved to Wetzel Co, WV; no issue.
6. Sarah WETZEL, 3/5/1823-6/12/1855, married Alexander TOOTHMAN, dau of George & Elisabeth, born "Preston Co." per her death record.
7. Elisabeth WETZEL, c1825-aft 1880. No proof of her ID but in 1850 she was living with Alexander TOOTHMAN.
NB, had at least 3 illeg children, of whom the first was claimed to be fathered by Richard LEWIS of Daybrook, Monongalia Co.
The complaint in that bastardy case calls her "single woman" and says that the child was born at the house of Henry WETZEL but does not otherwise ID her.
Elisabeth married Henry FLUHARTY Sr as 2nd wife and lived in Wetzel Co, WV, after her marriage.
In 1860 Henry WETZEL, from the 1850 Taylor census, is found living in the house of Alex TOOTHMAN, in Marion Co. Henry enlisted at Mannington in the Civil War and served 3 years (Co H, 14 WV Inf, I believe without looking it up). He married Elisabeth __, perhaps THORN (I quit working on FLUHARTYS and their entanglements 15 years ago, have not regretted it for a moment, and no longer remember why I think she was a THORN!). I believe he + prior to 1880, leaving widow and one surviving child (a couple of others + in childhood), James Leander WETZEL.
In 1885 Henry's widow remarried to Hamon FLUHARTY.
James L married Hamon's daughter by his first marriage and moved to, I think, Roane Co or somewhere in that area. His death record (I believe he lived till 1939 or 1940) might identify his mother's birth name. In 1870, if I recall correctly, Margaret is found in Henry's household, at Mannington.
The connection to Alex TOOTHMAN suggests to me that Henry's origins are somewhere in the same family as Alex's first wife, Sarah WETZEL. Henry's marriage is not of record in WV, nor is his death, so there is no statement at all of his parentage. I don't know if his widow applied for or received a veteran's widow pension after her death and before her remarriage, but it might be worth checking out. She did have minor children at the time of Henry's death.
If Margaret was about 10 years younger than the claimed age for her, she would fit very easily as a daughter of George and Elisabeth (SNOOK) WETZEL. At the claimed age, she's hard to fit into that family unless Elisabeth was only 12 or 13 at her marriage and had children for a stretch of about 30 years. (I don't know the date by which George WETZEL had married Elisabeth SNOOK.) She also seems much too young to be George's sister, if his claimed birthdate of c1767 is correct, and it's a bit of a stretch even if David YOUST's estimated birthdate for him of c1774 or later is correct. I am making the presumption that she was probably not married, but it is also possible she might have been the widow of George WETZEL's younger brother, but I don't know of a record which says so.
This family is of no known relation to the WETZEL in Marshall Co or to the group of WETZEL who lived in Preston Co, WV, descendants of John WETZEL and Mary TROXELL, though it's possible the latter family are connected somehow, as they also come from western MD. Considering that it's not that common a name, 18th century WETZEL in America seem remarkably difficult to sort out.
I'm not related to this family but most of them are connected to me. I'm a descendant of Andrew TOOTHMAN, the brother of Alexander, and his wife Margaret FLUHARTY, the sister of Hamon. These families all lived within a couple miles' walk of each other and are intricately intermarried.
